Description
September 2, 1969

Small firefights over disputed territory along the Soviet-Chinese border had been ongoing all year. Tensions finally reached a breaking point and one week ago the Soviet Union launched a massive invasion of Manchuria, aiming to replicate its 1945 operation against the Japanese. This time things are different and Chinese forces are holding on against the onslaught. However, both sides have resorted to the use of tactical nuclear weapons and areas of Manchuria resemble an irradiated moonscape.

While the United States has officially remained neutral, it has been openly sending military and humanitarian aid to China mainly through the port at Shanghai. President Nixon denounced the Soviet invasion and has quietly authorized the sharing of some military intelligence with China.

The US Navy has passed on limited information regarding a Soviet Task Force in-route to the East China Sea. This force of four ships is scheduled to pass between Okinawa and the Yaeyama Islands sometime tonight, attempting to use the cover of darkness and civilian merchant traffic to hide its maneuvers. These Soviet warships plan to strike Chinese vessels near Shanghai and likely even the port itself in an attempt to close it to maritime traffic.

The People's Liberation Army Air Force is stretched impossibly thin, with almost all its assets fighting in the north against the Soviet invasion. All that can be spared are two groups of J-5s, license-built MiG-17s, and one group of J-7s, copies of the MiG-21. Your eyes are a pair of H-6 bombers with airborne radar, themselves Chinese versions of the Tu-16. Use these to vector in your fighter-bombers.

These aircraft represent all of the available aircraft currently able to strike at the Soviet fleet. We hope the loss of even one Soviet ship will force them back. American warships are shadowing the Soviet task force and Japanese merchant traffic is crowding the seas. Hitting any of these vessels could cause the US to cut off all aid in response.

SECRET:
Your aircraft are operating at the limits of their ranges. Your J-7 pilots are more experienced and in better aircraft. If running low on fuel they must return to China. Your J-5s on the other hand are flown by inexperienced recruits and are in older and more expendable aircraft. In times like these, the loss of one Soviet ship is worth the cost of these men. Press home the attack, regardless of remaining fuel. With luck, they'll ditch and be picked up by an American warship.

For a harder, and more realistic challenge, don't use the Offensive Electronic Jamming on the Tu-16s.

The mission is quite simple and doesn’t require much flexibility in execution, but it’s still interesting. On my first playthrough, I managed to sink 3/4 of the enemy ships while losing about half of my aircraft. (play with WSR mod)

H-6 is copy of Tu-16 not Tu-22.
