1989 Gulf of Sidra Incident (Libya)

Description
January 4th, 1989, Gulf of Sidra
Amidst ongoing tensions between Libya and the United States over maritime territorial claims in the Mediterranean. Libya asserts sovereignty over the Gulf of Sidra up to the "line of death" at 32°30’N, while the U.S. challenges this claim by conducting naval operations in what it considers freedom of navigation under the pretext of maritime law.

Due to the heightened tension and military activity, two Libyan Arab Air Force MiG-23MS aircraft are ordered to intercept an unknown air contact off the coast of Al Bayda.

The situation remains tense, with both sides on high alert as the encounter escalates. The outcome is uncertain, with the possibility of an international incident looming over the Mediterranean skies.
