Random Quest

Description
I didn't make this, but it's one of my favourite mods ever. I spent a lot of time porting it to work with the new Workshop.

Originally made by Chris Fox and Jose Ameyugo, the duo behind Accidental Games/Spare Time Productions, creators of The Citizen series (a set of excellent HL2 mods you should check out).

Random Quest was released one year after The Citizen, in May of 2009. It's a strange anomaly for a HL2 mod, having no ambition to fit into the HL2 lore and instead paving its own way using the enemy designs of HL2 in its own inventive, surreal universe.

This mod is not combat-focused, though there is a lot towards the end. Instead, it's basically an adventure game, sort of like those weird, unparsable European point-and-click games of the early 2000s.
Most situations presented in Random Quest have two or more outcomes, depending on how you respond to them. A lot of the fun comes from trying to discover the limits of how the game can respond to you.

Here are some lines from the original ModDB description you would do well to remember:

This mod is intended to be more of an adventure rather than a shooter. If you approach this mod as a pure shooter, then you will probably not enjoy it.

We have tried to make the game as playable as possible no matter what the player does - if you want to run and gun your way through this mod (which is possible after you get your first weapon) then you can - however I think that the best experience of this mod can be gained by approaching it patiently and using your brain a bit more. The choice is yours.

Be warned - how you behave will have an effect on the game. For an example, the first (ranged) weapon that you receive will depend on your approach to the area before it.

There are often numerous ways to achieve your goals, and these may or may not be obvious.

Certain NPCs may ask you to do things for them. It's entirely up to you to decide if these NPCs are in any way relevant to your mission, if they can help you or not, and indeed if you want to let them stay alive.

The world Jose and Chris built is truly something to marvel at; spend some time looking at the architectural detail, falling somewhere between Myst and Ico, with a splash of The Longest Journey thrown in. Yet it still makes this blend unique all its own.
It's amazing how far re-coloring some HL2 characters will get you. With some really fun and vibrant voice acting on top of a superb script that doesn't overstay its welcome. It creates a fully belivable world.

Technical Notes:
  • This mod can be brutally difficult at times. There's no shame in using god mode.

  • In lieu of that, you may try fiddling with 'sk_plr_dmg_buckshot' and 'sk_npc_dmg_buckshot' to raise your damage or lower NPC's damage.

  • In the second-to-final arena some of the enemies may become cowardly, just shoot them to get their attention again.

  • The game doesn't really clip the environment or hold your hand from getting stuck on geometry, so don't wander too far out into the terrain (there are things to find out there though).

  • If the second level crashes with the message "Engine Hunk Overflow" you'll need to enter 'r_hunkalloclightmaps 0' into the console before reloading, this should already be handled though.
Let me know if any crashes or issues persist and I'll try to fix them. If you are the original creators, contact me and I'll happily send you my fixes and transfer this over to you.

I've played all the other mods in the workshop, but I'll pass on this one. I don't know, I haven't liked it since the beginning.

Just finished it in one sitting. I wish the creators expanded on this. It's a pretty neat mod with a unique atmosphere.
