November 20th, 1943 – The Second invasion beach on the island of Betio. Here, the 2nd Battalion, 2nd Marines wade ashore under tremendous mortar, machine gun as well as direct fire weapons. To the left of their approach stands the long wooden pier which has been fortified with Japanese Special Naval Landing Force and machine guns. Here too, the reef is too high for the higgins boats to traverse and the Marines are forced to wade ashore under blistering fire from the Japanese. Only two tanks are able to make it ashore on Red 1 and Red 2 respectively, faced with withering fire, the Marines make only small gains that are measured in yards and men.
