Originally intended as a backup landing beach and exposed to the open ocean, Black Beach was not used in the landings whatsoever. However, as it sat in the Red Beach 2 and Red Beach 3 operation zones, it needed to be cleared of Japanese resistance yard by bloody yard. The 1st Battalion 6th Marines would continue their push east along the length of the island until they linked up with the 2nd Battalion, 8th Marines who were also pushing east from Red Beach 3. By the end of the day, the 6th Marines and 8th Marines together have a continuous line from the north-south eastern side of the island.
