The aging Severn-class corvette has undergone a comprehensive refit to bring it up to date with modern technology. The upgrades have concentrated primarily on the power systems and armament.

The Severn's basic powerplant is untouched. However, a quartette of reserve batteries have been added, to allow the craft to operate in the contingency that all other power systems are rendered unsuable. This system is particularly helpful on long patrol missions, when only minimal power is needed; the reactors may be shut down to conserve uranium.

The two forward missile turrets have been replaced by a pair of fixed rocket launchers. Between the much higher rate of fire afforded by these, and the fact that the gunner can launch them from twice the range at which turrets will acquire a target, the Severn's chase capability is greatly expanded. An additional gatling turret has also been added, to increase the craft's anti-fighter and point defense ability.

In the process of receiving these upgrades, the Severn gained some mass. This has been countered by the addition of a number of small thrusters, giving the craft greater acceleration to maximum velocity than the previous version. The vessel also received a complete redesign of the interior during the overhaul process. Finally, the docking system has been updated to match the modern variant.

The Severn is one of AAM's more popular designs, but the principle customer for these vessels is not militaries. Instead, the majority of purchases are made by police organizations. As a corvette, the Severn is designed for patrol and escort duties, both of which make it quite useful for groups intent on control of an area of space at low cost. The Severn is used for everything from border inspections to pirate hunting.
As a corvette, the craft does not feature a dedicated anti-warship weapon system, nor does it feature heavy armoring. Anyone bringing a corvette to a line battle is in for a rude shock. Instead, the corvette is intended to be deployed against light craft and armed commercial and industrial vessels.

Unfortunately, many of the attributes that make it appealing to police groups have also made it popular with pirates, and hijacked Severns are an all-too-common sight in many pirate fleets.

Bah... I was reading all the comments at once, and got confused between this one and your destroyer which I also commented on and similarly mentioned the armaments. Oh well, my speech about destroyers stands.

Anyway, yes. This is a corvette. Corvettes were ALSO a funky classification. They were forgotten for ages, then reconsidered during WWII, and now some nations actively field them. But again, it's a sort of subjective definition and not really well clarified. Being a smaller, faster sort of classification I often consider corvettes as ideal strike craft for hit-and-run or interception of slower ships. The missile weapons do a good job on that, and the gatlings make it effective against lightly armored targets. Which makes great sense for your classification of it as a police vessel!

It really is, and not just because of the ambiguity of S.E. but because the word "destroyer" has meant so many different things at so many different times. Modern destroyers are heavy surface combatants. In WWII, American Destroyer Leaders were the size of everyone else's frigates, and our destroyer escorts were light weights that mostly only did AA & anti-submarine combat.

Since S.E. doesn't have stealth vessels that would operate like submarines, when we classify destroyers in here they're not going to fit that role any more... so it's all sort of iffy...

I tend to go with Escorts (Destroyer Escorts / DE) as small ship AA support, and then [fleet] Destroyers (DD) as medium sized surface combatants. My destroyer is built for hunting other ships of its size and is somewhat vulnerable to fighters because of that armament focus, whereas my cruisers will be more well-rounded I think.

Thanks, I'm glad you like it! And it's good to know you think its armament etc. is appropriate for its type; it's hard to get a good feel for that at this stage in development.

Beautiful design. Absolutely beautiful. I really liked the way that you put the bunks in on the lower deck, and the secondary command deck beneath the observation deck. It has reasonable arms, armor, and maneuverability for a ship of its class. Excellent design in all regards.
