Description
The strait of Hormuz June 6, 1985.

From: 5th Operational Squadron HQ, Soviet Military Maritime Fleet.
To: The Commanding Officer of missile-destroyer Boevoy.
URGENT - TOP SECRET – Commanding Officer’s Eyes Only.

Comrade Commander,

Subject: Rescue operation.

SITREP: Today at 02:55 Zulu, while innocently sailing eastward through the strait of Hormuz the Soviet flagged trawler M/V Zond (yes, Zond, her name is Zond) was intercepted by Iranian patrol boats falsely claiming she had violated the territorial waters of the Islamic Republic of Iran and was monitoring Iranian military radio communications. The Iranian so called ‘Coast Guards’ ordered M/V Zond’s Captain to turn-off his vessel’s transponder and to sail to Bandar Abbas to be detained under the accusation of spying. Our Ambassy in Tehran immediately issued a strong protest to the Iranian government asking for the immediate release of the vessel. However, the Iranian government denied any involvement or knowledge of this operation. According to KGB intelligence, it seems this incident is the result of an internal struggle within the Iranian military between the moderates (which seek a compromise to end the war with Iraq) and the hardliners who wants to continue the war. The hardliners intend to use M/V Zond as a bargaining tool to force our government to reconsider its arms sales to Iraq.

INTEL:
M/V Zond is presently sailing under escort of four Iranian Kaivan-class patrol boats and her last reported position is 26.56 N / 56.25 E on course 045. The Strait of Hormuz area is patrolled by the IRI Navy and Air Force. Imperialist forces of the United States of America are operating in the area under the guise of freedom of navigation protection.

ORDERS:
1) Locate, track and identify M/V Zond and her escort.
2) Contact and convince M/V Zond’s escort to release her. Since the 4 patrol boats are not officially part of the IRI Navy, they can be considered as pirates, and thus the use of deadly force against them is authorized in case they refuse to comply.
3) Once M/V Zond is freed from her escort order her to sail to the SAFE ZONE located off the coast of Oman.
In any case it is imperative that M/V Zond does not reach Bandar Abbas nor any other Iranian port. You are authorized to use any mean necessary (within the below Rules of Engagement) to achieve this objective.

ROE:
1) The four pirate patrol boats are considered as hostile; you are authorized to engaged them at will.
2) Do not engage, any other contact unless fired upon first.

Remember failure is not an option Comrade. Your career is at stake.

Friendly Forces:
Boevoy EM-678 - Sovremenny-class destroyer
Rezkiy SKR-942- Krivak 2-class frigate

Hostile Forces:
Four Kaivan-class patrol boats.

Two state of the art Soviet warships against four small patrol boats, it's going to be like a walk in Gorki Park Comrade!
