Chung Chi Hall Student Canteen, CUHK | 香港中文大學眾志堂 [Campus DLC]

Chung Chi Hall Student Center is an iconic architecture located in the Chinese University of Hong Kong. Designed by Dennis Lau & Ng Chun Man Architects in 1970, it is one of the earliest buildings constructed for the university. It currently serve as a student canteen and a major event space for the university.

Considering the student activity centre as a focal point in Chung Chi College, the client has requested a special building form at the beginning. It serves such multi-functional purposes as eatery hall, film screening, ballroom, etc. Influenced by the geometric and monumental forms of brutalist architecture, Chung Chi Tang features a striking triangular massing that forms the main hall, while a cantilevered box provides community space and shaded seating. Triangular frames form an efficient and economical structure that enables excellent cross ventilation and natural lighting. The resultant architecture forms a focal point in Chung Chi College yet remains in harmony with the greenery that surrounds the site.

This is my first asset in a series of works that would include other iconic buildings in the CUHK campus as well as modernist/brutalist architecture in Hong Kong. With the amazing Hong Kong building assets already on the workshop (like extensive coverage on corner houses, as well as the famous skyscapers and towering housing estates), I aim to fill the gap for architecturally focused assets in the city.
