P441 A "Orion"

History

The P441-A1 "Orion"

The P441-A1 "Orion" entered service in 1939 as one of the United States’ first modern fighters in the Pacific. Developed under a 1936 contract, it was designed to replace aging P331s and provide a fast, manoeuvrable platform for air combat and interception. However, its performance fell short of expectations. The Orion was underpowered compared to its contemporaries, with mediocre speed, poor climb rates, and sluggish turning ability. Armed with only 4x .30 caliber machine guns, it struggled to hold its own against the way more advanced Japanese fighters it was tasked to engage.

Despite its shortcomings, the P441 was durable and versatile, with a rugged airframe and reliable engine. As frontline dogfights began to favor more capable aircraft, the Orion transitioned to a fighter-bomber role. Pilots used it for ground attack missions, flying at low altitudes to bomb assembly points, depots, troop concentrations, and light vehicles. Its simple armament, while insufficient for air superiority, was effective for strafing infantry and soft targets and so the pilots constantly were called in to make simple strafing runs to disperse enemy infantry during defences, attacks, counterattacks etc..

The P441’s ability to operate without escorts made it a valuable tool in the early stages of the war, where resources were stretched very thin. Squadrons of Orions flew daily missions from makeshift airstrips in the alaskan wilderniss, providing support to advancing infantry or disrupting enemy logistics. While losses were high due to its limited performance and lack of escorts and masses of Anti Air, the Orion proved essential for filling the gap until more advanced aircraft became available.

By the time newer designs arrived, the Orion’s limitations had become undeniable, but its contributions in the war’s opening years were undeniable. Though never considered a top-tier fighter, it played an essential role in the war effort, giving American forces an edge in situations where every aircraft mattered.

  4. Throttle up to around 25-50 to keep the engine running.
  5. Disable breaks and enable wheel steering to move out of the hangar into the takeoff position (it should start moving on its own without breaks)
  6. Throttle to 100% to take off

Further Notes
-The canopy moves around a little on medium and low physics because of the subgrids.
- If you crash it will explode (duh)

About the Project
The Pacific Front is a Alternate History Project about the time from 1940s through to the 70s in a time of turmoil, war and desperation. It focuses on the countries around the pacific ocean, like the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Russia, China and a lot more. All the the project vehicles are fictional in nature and have their own story, lore and design. The Projects creations have a tendency for high fidelity, decoration and multi crew operation.
