Description:

Always on the periphery, Korovia was somehow both forgotten and ravaged by its overlord. When its people were imperiled, its oppressors turned a blind eye. If ever its people succeeded, the vultures from the metropole would, unfailingly, swoop in to steal the spoils. Its remote location in the frigid north prevented even wartime investment in the floundering region; even its beleaguered self-defense forces were more than enough to quash the petty warlords and banditry that dared challenge Korovian might (though "might" is something of an overstatement). Largely dependent on imports to feed its populace, Korovia's only large industry was that of its factories, built due to the abundance of raw materials in the area - raw materials that were for the empire's use only.

By the dawn of the late 20th century, Korovia had been stuck within something of a death spiral. Plagued with famine, labor shortages, civil discontent, and an upsurge in nationalism, the motherland reluctantly offered the region some autonomy. Ascended from a province to a protectorate, Korovia was finally granted a country of its own for the first time in centuries. Yet the people hardly rejoiced; rather, this newfound autonomy only cemented the Korovians' belief that freedom was possible. The protectorate's governor, appointed by bureaucrats in the imperial capital, was soon killed by a group crowning themselves the "Korovia of Tomorrow": a militantly nationalist military clique dedicated to ridding Korovia of foreign meddling.

The governor's assassination proved only to exacerbate the region's problems. Extremists were emboldened, leading to a prolonged period of violent street conflict that the local gendarmerie were woefully incapable of halting. With little other choice, the protectorate called upon imperial troops to crush the revolutionary upstarts. In no time at all, martial law was declared across the protectorate. Tanks rolled across Korovian streets to the shouts and boos of locals. Violent nationalism, previously relegated to the fringes of politics, was made mainstream but temporarily unfeasible due to the presence of imperial soldiers. Facing more pressing revolts to the warmer south, however, the empire soon withdrew, leaving an enormous power vacuum and lingering anti-imperial sentiments in their wake.

What followed was an incredibly bloody, insurgency-ridden civil war. Advocates of a "Greater Korovia" clashed with left-wing populists, military warlords struck their claim on parcels of land, while the internationally-recognized protectorate was left without its protector. After 8 long years of warfare, the largest belligerents were eventually coaxed into a tenuous peace agreement by international delegates.

Korovia now stands on the precipice. Ruled by a big-tent provisional administration (the National Revival Committee, ONP) often slowed by internal dissent, the Korovian government will need to either unify or be unified to stand as a cohesive bloc capable of truly reviving the nation. Similarly, the vestiges of insurgent groups still remain in the country. The withdrawal of peacekeeping forces only 8 years prior has left its borders under a shaky peace. Its military is of variable quality, largely made up of conscripts with a handful of well-drilled volunteer divisions mixed in. With a lack of food imports from the now-defunct empire, Korovia would do well to seek allies abroad that could address its shortages before a famine strikes. Perhaps its greatest advantage is its industrial capability: thanks to its large build-up prior to the war, its natural resources, and foreign technical assistance, Korovia's factories and forges echo throughout the night sky with a patriotic chorus, breathing life into machines intended to take the very same thing away.

Regardless of its position, one thing is for certain: Korovia stands free.
