B1 Tachi

History

The B1 "Tachi" was a versatile single-engine torpedo bomber introduced in 1939 as a key component of Japan’s naval and ground-based air forces. Designed for flexibility, it could operate from both aircraft carriers and land bases, giving it broad utility in the Mainland Asiatic Theatre, Alaskan Theatre and Pacific Theatre. Capable of carrying either bombs or a single torpedo, the Tachi was well-suited for patrol bombing, striking frontline ground targets, and engaging enemy ships. Its decent speed and maneuverability allowed it to evade interception better than many of its contemporaries, though it lacked heavy defensive armament.

With a crew of three—a pilot, a spotter/bombardier, and a rear gunner—the Tachi was equipped to perform both reconnaissance and ground/ naval strike missions. The forward-facing 12.7mm machine guns gave it some offensive capability, useful for strafing smaller targets or engaging lightly armed opponents. Defensive duties fell to the gunner manning a single 7.62mm turret, which, while adequate against uncoordinated attacks, struggled against well-organized enemy fighters. Despite this, the Tachi’s crews appreciated its reliability and effectiveness in fulfilling its intended roles.

In tn the initial service over the alaskan mainland there were multiple issues with the engines freezing over on the ground and maintenance crews constantly having to replace frozen off parts and install heating units on pipes and engine parts. It also needed a redesign of the canopy due to it constantly freezing over and getting stuck on the ground and during flight,
Throughout its service, the B1 "Tachi" saw action in some of Japan’s most critical operations, including early naval campaigns and the defence of key islands. While its design began to show its age by the later stages of the war, the aircraft remained in service until 1945 due to its adaptability and the lack of a direct replacement. By the end of the conflict, the Tachi had cemented its legacy as a dependable workhorse, contributing significantly to Japan’s air and naval strategies in the Pacific.

About the Project
The Pacific Front is a Alternate History Project about the time from 1940s through to the 70s in a time of turmoil, war and desperation. It focuses on the countries around the pacific ocean, like the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Russia, China and a lot more. All the the project vehicles are fictional in nature and have their own story, lore and design. The Projects creations have a tendency for high fidelity, decoration and multi crew operation.
