USS Marshall (PCE 822)

History of Stuart class Gunboat Escort

The Stuart-class gunboats are introduced to the U.S. Navy in late 1941 as versatile escorts for coastal defense, convoy protection, and anti-submarine operations. At 55 meters long and armed with a mix of 3-inch guns, depth charges, and anti-aircraft weaponry, these ships excel in patrolling contested waters. Designed for endurance rather than raw firepower, their small size and relatively light armament leave them vulnerable to larger enemy vessels, torpedo boats, and air strikes. Nearly 90 Stuart-class vessels are built during the war, with many serving into the postwar years despite heavy losses to Japanese submarines and bombers.

History of USS Marshall (PCE 822)

Commissioned in December 1941, the USS Marshall begins its service in the icy waters off Alaska, protecting key supply routes and defending against Japanese incursions. It plays a vital role in the grueling nine-month campaign to retake the Aleutian Islands, engaging enemy submarines and providing fire support during amphibious landings. The harsh conditions and near-constant threat of attack test its crew to the limit, but the Marshall proves a reliable asset in one of the war's most overlooked theaters.

After the Aleutian campaign, the USS Marshall is redeployed to the Hawaiian Islands, where it supports supply convoys and offensive operations to retake the archipelago from Japanese control. It remains active throughout the brutal naval battles that follow, including the 1946 engagement in the Philippines. In this climactic battle, the Marshall is struck midships by a 16-inch shell from a Japanese battleship. The devastating hit breaks the gunboat in two, sending it to the ocean floor within minutes. Only 16 of its crew survive the attack, marking the end of the Marshall’s service but solidifying its place as a testament to the resilience and sacrifice of the Stuart-class gunboats.

About the Project
The Pacific Front is a Alternate History Project about the time from 1940s through to the 70s in a time of turmoil, war and desperation. It focuses on the countries around the pacific ocean, like the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Russia, China and a lot more. All the the project vehicles are fictional in nature and have their own story, lore and design. The Projects creations have a tendency for high fidelity, decoration and multi crew operation.
