SUBJ: Mission Orders

1. (S) SITUATION:
Following the initiation of hostilities between NATO and the Warsaw Pact, Northern Fleet submarines have sortied from Murmansk into the North Atlantic. Initial attempts to intercept submarine traffic has proven partially successful in the North Sea and off Iceland, however merchant losses have been mounting. On 22NOV Satellite Imagery revealed a follow-on wave of submarines preparing to sortie into the North Atlantic. Intelligence assesses it as very likely that these submarines will attempt to break through the GIUK gap and interdict Atlantic SLOC. As a result, ASW Task Force 23.5 was dispatched from Portsmouth on 025NOV to defend the Atlantic Barrier.

2. (S) MISSION:
2.1 TF 23.5 shall station within FSC and conduct a barrier search.
2.2 TF 23.5 shall destroy all Soviet submarine traffic transiting FSC.

3. (S) EXECUTION:
3.1 Proceed North-Northwest into the Faroe-Shetland Channel.
3.2 Execute a barrier ASW search IVO Faroe-Shetland Channel.
3.3 Utilize intelligence, patrol aircraft, and helo assets to aid in search.
3.4 Ensure positive target identification prior to engagement.

4. (S) ENEMY OOB:
4.1 FAROE-SHETLAND CHANNEL - 1x KILO SSK, 1x VICTOR-III SSN, 1x CHARLIE-II SSGN.
4.2 Additional forces may be present in the area:
4.2.1 1x KILO SSK, 1x ECHO-II SSGN, 1x VICTOR-II SSN

5.1.2 USS NICHOLAS FFG-47
5.1.3 USS MILLER FF-1091

6. (S) REMARKS:
6.1 Sea State 4, Winds 17-21kts Northwest, gusting to 35kts. Clouds Broken/Heavy, Visibility 2 NMI.
6.2 Poor Weather Conditions may hamper sonar and aviation effectiveness.
