How do I keep track of which battery is which once I've tested them?

That's the neat part: you don't. You put all the batteries that aren't completely dead into your miscellaneous junk drawer and when you need a replacement battery you keep trying them until you find one with enough charge. Then you put the others back in the drawer because they're still good enough for the TV remote.

Is that really how you managed batteries in the 1990s?

Yep. Unless you paid extra for the fancy Duracell ones with a built in test strip that required you to squeeze the battery hard enough to cause muscle strain so you could waste half the stored energy slowly lighting up a green strip that gave a vague approximation of the battery's charge.

No, I meant did you really just throw all the half-used batteries in a drawer?

They were too expensive to just throw out when they would still work in low-power items! As anyone trapped in a dark building frantically trying to get their torch going again while zombies bang on the door knows, a mostly-dead battery is vastly better than no battery at all.
