History:

Bejeweled's Brilliant History

Bejeweled has been one of the world's most popular puzzle games for 10 years running now! 500 million people worldwide just can't seem to get enough of Bejeweled. Once you play, it's easy to see why Bejeweled games keep people coming back for more.

Bejeweled was created by PopCap Games in the year 2000 as a web-based Flash game. The game was originally called Diamond Mine, but was later changed to Bejeweled because it was too similar to that of an existing game called Diamond Mines. Since its creation, several copy-cat games, known as "match three" games have spawned, but none can compare to the brilliance of Bejeweled.

2000

Bejeweled was born in a tiny apartment in Seattle. Creators Brian, John and Jason didn't have much money or equipment, but they did have a dream. They came up with a game they called "Diamond Mine" and tested it out on Mom.

"If my mom likes it, who normally doesn't like games, there must be something there. She may not know good game design, but she knows what she likes." —Jason Kapalka

The game debuts on Web portals everywhere! The name "Diamond Mine" sounds too much like another title and gets changed to Bejeweled.
