Gee Bee Super Sportster R-1

The Granvilles simply streamlined a Pratt and Whitney Wasp Sr engine and added just enough wing and tail control surface area to barely keep it airborne and moving at a record speed of almost 300 mph. All this in 1932.

The R-1, piloted by Jimmy Doolittle, won the 1932 Thompson Trophy race. He lapped all but one ship in the race, made easy turns and never had to come down and make a tight pylon turn. He also set a new F.A.I. world landplane speed record of 296 mph (476 km/h) in the Shell Speed Dash.


📌 Realistic in scale and weight
📌 A rich mixture increases power, but an AFR below 13 requires the engine to be hot; otherwise, it reduces power.
📌 Don't activate Supercharger before takeoff, engine is already quite powerful.
📌 The engine is loud due to its four-crankshaft design; use a headset at your discretion.
📌 Ground adjustable propeller setting which is accessible near the engine
📌 Relatively easy to control with altitude & direction hold, reverse on water, mouse control
📌 Startup guide is available at the cockpit, above the parking brake button.
📌 In real Gee Bee R-1, canopy does not open, instead there is door right of the seat. However I couldn't fit a door there.
