[VManip] Neosun's Cooler Nightvision

Description
"This. Is. Garry's Mod."
- BadDragon69, World Famous Gmod Realism Grifter.

--------------

This is a HEAVY modification of Arctic's Night Vision mod (this one: https://steamhost.cn/steamcommunity_com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2389553185 ) which changes EVERYTHING in order to be more accurate to how nightvision looks in real life. It's still far from perfect, but in-so-far this is the most "correct" portrayal of nightvision to date on the workshop... Plus some funsies thrown into the mix because all realism and no fun makes you a dull boy.

Because this mod works effectively the exact same way under the hood as Arctic's original mod, I will merely post the relevant details from his workshop page's description here.

BEWARE: THIS MOD WILL CONFLICT WITH THE ORIGINAL ARCTIC'S NIGHT VISION MOD. ONLY USE ONE OR THE OTHER. USING BOTH WILL CAUSE ISSUES.

A set of 5 VManip-based night vision goggles, + a pair of dapper shades.

BIND N ARC_VM_NVG
GET GOGGLES IN ENTITIES -> Neosun's Cooler Nightvision
SH_ARCTIC_NVG_LOSEGOGGLES 0 TO KEEP GOGGLES ON DEATH
Type the command "bind n arc_vm_nvg" in console to bind n (Substitute for a key of your choice) to toggle night vision.

"Another of my two-day VManip addons. A spiritual successor to ACT3NVG and in a way, the RP binoculars addon. Finally, this is a night vision addon with physical goggles that has animations for equipping each of them as well as the ability to see other players wearing NVGs or shades. Bear in mind that as player models are so diverse, clipping is bound to happen. All testing was done on male_07. No citizens were harmed during the making of this mod.

Functionality is partly based on a color correction shader which amplifies ambient light, but goggles also include a subtle active emitter in order to function even in pitch black dark environments such as the gm_construct void."

This mod works with Arctic's Combat Stims and ARC9's IR-laser system. ArcCW is still supported as under the hood, not much has changed.

------

What, exactly, is different from my version and Arctic's version?

  • Made the GPNVG-18s black for all of your Bravo Delta Sierra Mike LARPer purposes. No, I will not be making an option for tan.
  • All NODs have been renamed to their proper, real-life names.
  • All overlays have been remade to be a more accurate portrayal of nightvision (Yes, GPNVG-18s really do look like this. Don't believe me? Take both of your hands, make a peace/V sign in both, and slowly bring them up to your eyes (pointing at you as if you were going to poke your eye- don't actually poke yourself though). Instead of seeing four fingers, you will see three. The center dot has been elongated slightly to make a cleaner visualization of the inner-two tubes converging together. In real life it is a perfect OOO.
  • Added multiple color choices for every model of NOD, including realistic ones such as Green and White Phosphor... and then some fun ones, like Amber, Red, Blue, and Purple.
  • Made thermals give a slight nightvision effect, just like their real-life counterpart. I'm not an experienced programmer, so I have not implemented a low refreshrate when using thermals.
  • Reimagined some of Arctic's fictional nightvision ideas with my own spin on it... Plus a few new ones.
  • Added a slight ToyTown effect to simulate focal-point.

Credits
- Arctic: Code, original addon, helping implement the ToyTown effect.
- slogkot: Animation.
- chen: Better version of VManip (Seriously, you should be using this version instead of Datae's)

- Infinity Ward: Audio for NVG interactions.
- Dopey: NVG activation sounds.
- Blender Foundation: Blender was used to render the entity spawn icons.

- (You): for being a cutie-patootie by enjoying mods made by me, Arctic, and company ♥

KNOWN INACCURACIES:

  • NODs do not adjust for brightness sensitivity. Arctic tried to make a system for it but failed. There is a fake dimming on the inner tubes of the GPNVG-18s to help sell the illusion.
  • The L3 Harris GPNVG-18's center dot is technically wider than it should be, though this is an artist's depiction of the effect that happens when the two inner tubes combine into one singular circle in your field of vision. In real life, it looks like a perfect OOO yet doing this in 2D caused a level of peripheral vision loss that does not occur with real panoramic nightvision goggles.
  • Thermals are able to see through glass. Not sure how to remedy that as I am not a programmer.
  • Currently, the noise on all NODs are static. I have been running tests to make animated noise but I am currently running into issues where the textures are flickering. If I can fix that, I will update this mod with animated noise.
  • I do not currently have a way to convey exactly how garbage the PNV-10T's are in real life from a gameplay perspective as their fundamental issue is that they lack depth perception.
  • You do not have any form of peripheral vision with PVS-14 Monoculars. In real life, you see nightvision out of one eye and are able to use your other eye to make up for the lack of peripheral view... Or use thermals. Because I have no way to isolate post-processing to one area, I can't actually do this in a way that is "correct".
  • Technically the GPNVG-18s don't come in black but my hatred for tan in places where it doesn't belong is so strong that I genuinely do not care.

Quick Q&A
Q: Where do I find these?
A: In the entities tab under "Neosun's Cooler Nightvision"

Q: Is there a way to spawn with these?
A: I'm afraid not, but there is a way to keep them after death. Enter this into the console: sh_arctic_nvg_losegoggles 0

Q: when unlameifier
A: as soon™ as I can.

Q: Help, this isn't working the way the video is demonstrating!!
A: It's almost dead certain that you have an addon conflict. Follow these steps to verify that (got tired of posting this how-to in the comment section):

"help my gmod is doing something weird or things aren't working correctly"

step 1. disable all addons except for the thing you're having trouble with (and its requirements) to verify if this still happens with nothing installed
step 2a. if problem persists, verify gmod's file integrity and check again
step 2b. if problem is resolved, re-enable all addons that were previously in use and then disable addons page by page until the problem goes away again
step 3. narrow down addons row by row on that page until you've narrowed it down to the culprit

remember to close and restart the game every time you enable/disable an addon so gmod can refresh everything.

Comments disabled because the sheer number of people who can't read either the description or other comments people have made have reached a point where I'm done trying to put up with it. Sorry if you had something nice to say, but this is why we can't have nice things.
