March 22nd, 1945. After the 3rd Marine Division had taken Kitano Point, the northernmost point of the island, the Japanese were boxed in at Kitano Gorge on the northwest tip of the island. A rocky, craggy area north of the third airfield, this area was the main headquarters for the Japanese commander, General Tadamichi Kuribyashi. On March 22nd 1945, the Marine’s finally captured the Japanese headquarters and destroyed it. The fighting became so slow and bloody that the Americans would come to call this area “Bloody Gorge”.
