For centuries, what is now Finland has stood under the everwatching eyes of Russia, or has been subjected to the distant rule of other Scandinavian powers. In the wake of World War One, Finland finally threw off these shackles and stood at last on the world stage in its own right. The position has not been easy, but time and time again Finland has come to demonstrate its might against those who seek to repress it once more.
