Description
Play as the awaited hero of the Samaniyya, Muhammad al-Mahdi; in Sid Meier's Civilization VI.

Sudan was once the land of Nubia until the Rashidun Caliphate introduced the Bedouins to the Nile. Centuries of peace and commerce was gradually tore down powers like the Mamluk and Ottoman Sultanates. Eventually the Sudanese identity grew as a merger of Bedouin, Nubian, Daju, Fur, and Nilotic cultures across the Nile, White Nile, and Blue Nile rivers. Christianity, once the face of Nubian art and architecture, was usurped by the crescent to establish sultanates such as Funj and Darfur. The Scramble for Africa in Sudan was initiated by joint Turco-Egyptian and British activity in the Sudan. The incursion of Christian governors employed by the Ottomans and Christian missions supported by the British triggered an ultra conservative and pro-slavery awakening within the Islamic hierarchy, ushering in the Mahdist Wars that defined the Sudan as a distinct region on the Nile and not whole Sahara. British and Egyptian colonization came to a close after World War II, and Sudan would endure countless coups from both socialists, militants, and mujahideen factions going into the 21st century.
