Description
The GE Genesis Series I, includes 2 models of diesel locomotives the P40DC & P42DC (and later derivatives). The Genesis locomotive series have been the workhorse of Amtrak's national fleet for the past 3 decades. Today they are slated to be gradually phased out in favor of Siemens Charger units (ALC-42s) or the yet to be delivered Airos.

The P40DC was the first Genesis series locomotive and began operation in 1993 for Amtrak. It replaced the EMD F40PHs, as Amtrak could have 2 P40DCs could haul trains in place of 3 F40PHs. The P40DCs were eventually replaced by the P42DCs on Amtrak operation. However Amtrak sold 8 to Connecticut DOT and then 4 to NJ Transit (who then later sold them to Connecticut DOT as well). The NJ Transit locomotives were upgraded in 2007 to match the P42DCs 4250HP, and in 2018 Amtrak upgraded the rest of the CT Rail P40DCs to the higher HP movers. Today these upgraded units run on CTRail's non-electrified Hartford Line.

P42DCs were first introduced in 1996 for Amtrak as a more powerful successor model to the P40DCs. After nearly 3 decades as the primary locomotives for Amtrak's long distance and higherspeed services, they are set to be replaced by Siemens ALC-42s, but remain in service on shorter routes until the arrival of the Airo units. Via Rail also took an order of P42DCs for the Quebec City-Windsor corridor in 2001. Via Rail intends to have all corridor runs be with Siemens SCV-42s in place of the P42DCs.

The P42Cs are what Amtrak calls "Cabbage" units. Which are a combination of a non-powered control unit (NPCU) and baggage car. These are repurposed P42DCs that have had their prime mover removed. Though unlike previous locomotive conversions to NPCUs, Amtrak keep the internal components for wieght purposes. Amtrak intends to convert roughly 20 P42DCs into NPCUs.
