Shieldmaidens were not the current day progressive girlbosses, they were wives, mothers, daughters and they worked to support the men around them that did the actual fighting. That aside there definitely were some tough women, and they would participate in defense as best they could in emergency, but that would mean the men are dead or gone, and it is in extremis.
Women were important in the viking world, they were cherished respected and loved, they were not some Hollywood boss bitch.
