Description
The Type 42 or Sheffield-class destroyers are sixteen guided missile air defence destroyers built for the British Royal Navy and the Argentine Navy. When the Type 82 air defence destroyers were cancelled by the Labour Government of 1966, the Type 42 was proposed as a lighter and cheaper design with similar capabilities to the Type 82. In total, 16 vessels were constructed in two batches. In addition to the Royal Navy ships, two more ships were built to the same specifications as the Batch 1 vessels for the Argentine Navy. Hércules was built in the UK and Santísima Trinidad in the AFNE Rio Santiago shipyard in Buenos Aires. They would serve the Royal Navy faithfully during the Falklands War and beyond, with Sheffield and Coventry lost from Argentine air attack. Unlike other Royal Navy warships which would receive Harpoon by the time of the Falklands Conflict, the Type 42s would retain their Exocet anti-ship missiles on account of their AAW focused role. The Type 42s would ultimately serve into the early 2000s before being replaced by newer, larger, and more capable AAW destroyers like the Type 45.

Right, so technically my first replica since the Brooke, with some changes to better match the in-universe lore and whatnot. While I realize the Type 42s were split into two batches, for the sake of this mod, I condensed it to two batches, all of the historical Batch 1 ships about in their Falklands or just pre-Falklands fit, and all of the Batch 2 and Batch 3 ships condensed into one unified Batch 2 class that comes armed with the historical pair of Phalanx flanking the funnels, a lightweight four cell Sea Wolf launcher originally planned for the Type 42s, and an accurate radar fit. Unlike my other Sea Dart capable ships, this is the first to use Talos as a Sea Dart stand-in rather than just Standard, which works as a very strong, albeit slightly large replica. I do want to do more with minor nations, potentially some more export British ships, but this does bring both Trinidad and Hercules in the interim. With that, I need sleep. Enjoy!
