This guide is created for new players without spoiling the story, and only basic info and secrets are given.

My goal is to make this short and succinct as a reference so that the new players can enjoy and focus more on the game and its story. Additionally, please let me know if there is any missing event/ secret in the game.

I would recommend the new players to play the INTEGRAL version, which has better SFX and extra stuffs. The only downside is that it only has JAPANESE descriptions. Also, check the Online Manual before playing, as it covers techniques that the game won't tell you, such as Running Aim or Leaning.

This is section for tips/ secrets. It's optional and can be skipped if you're familiar to the game. - Extra dialogs are dialogues occurred in specific situations in a specific location. It's also to help understand the characters better. Some dialogs happen automatically or can be triggered earlier. - Dialogues that are occurred automatically when approaching a story-related location won't be included. For instance, CAMPBELL's tutorial calls won't be included.

The table lists the ITEMS/ WEAPONS in the area.
  • It's recommended to pick them up only if you're low in stocks or don't have them, especially in EXTREME Difficulty.

(*) Equip the CIGARETTES and contact CAMPBELL/ MEI LING (SAVE) for extra dialogs.
(*) Obtaining any weapons (CHAFF/ STUN/ SOCOM) and contact CAMPBELL to learn NASTASHA's CODEC Frequency.
(*) Contact NASTASHA whenever you equip weapons/ items to learn extra info. Otherwise, she will provide info about NUCLEAR HANDLING & SITUATIONS in that time era.

There are 2 ducts to CRAWL in:
(*) If you get spotted, an extra scene will be added when the cutscene in either Duct is triggered. For the Lower Duct case, it's at the end of the left path.
  1. The Lower Duct, under the sleeping guard in NW corner.
    (*) Throw a CHAFF GRENADE (far from any guard) and CRAWL past him.
    (*) If you don't acquire SOCOM, there will be an extra scene at the end of the left path.
    (*) In the Lower Duct, MASTER will have extra dialogs when calling you.

  • Head in the North wall for the BOSS Fight.
BOSS: REVOLVER OCELOT
(*) Contact CAMPBELL/ MASTER/ NASTASHA for extra dialogs + hints.

STRATEGY:
  • CROUCH or LEAN LEFT/ RIGHT (in FIRST PERSON VIEW) to dodge his bullet trajectory.
  • Use SOCOM only to shoot while he's reloading.
  • Use STUN GRENADES to blind him.

EASY METHOD:
  • Hug the CENTER of any PILLAR. Don't go over the edge or it won't work.
  • While still hugging the Pillar, CROUCH when he shoots. STAND up again. Repeat until he reloads.
  • Get out and shoot him diagonally. He is always at the opposite side of your position diagonally.
  • Repeat the process.

(*) Depending on how well you fight him, his remarks will be different in the cutscene.
(*) After the scene with BAKER, contact MASTER for extra dialogs.

  • Use THERMAL GOGGLES to spot him in STEALTH CAMOUFLAGE.
  • Use SOCOM when he's in BURST Mode (0% HP).

EASY METHOD:
  • Stay at the narrow pathway in the middle North (in between the cubicle and the 2 white control panels) to limit his maneuvers in either Left/ Right.
  • Attack him whenever his maneuvers end.

(*) Following MERYL and checking the last stall under 5 sec will result in alternate cutscenes with her wearing panties.

(*) After the cutscenes with MERYL, contact CAMPBELL/ MEI LING/ OTACON for extra dialogs.

(*) Look at MERYL in FIRST PERSON VIEW will make her blush.

    (*) Killing MERYL will result in Game-Over.

(*) When the fight with him starts, contact CAMPBELL/ NASTASHA for extra dialogs + hints.
(*) Depending on how often you SAVE and how well your performance is, his remarks will be differently.

STRATEGY:
  • Throw MERYL down to knock out her - OR - Use STUN GRENADES.
  • Resolve "HIDEO" black screen by changing Controller Port in PAUSE MENU.
  • Counter his "mind reading" by using Controller Port 2.
    (*) Destroy 2 bust statues in NW/ NE also counter his "mind reading". Contact CAMPBELL for this hints. (Only available after 3 continues)

  • THERMAL GOGGLES/ FIRST PERSON VIEW reveals his location in STEALTH CAMOUFLAGE.
  • CRAWL to dodge his telekinesis attacks.
  • Stay behind the West table to avoid his BOOKS/ PORTRAIT attack.
  • SOCOM/ FA-MAS are effective weapons to damage him.

(*) After catching up with MERYL in the CAVE, all the Dogs will gather around her instead of roaming around.
(*) Harm MERYL once (Lethal or non-Lethal) and quickly equip the CARDBOARD BOX A/B. The PUPPY will pee on the BOX instead. Travel in the CAVE in this specific BOX will make the DOGS friendly.
(*) Heading back to the COMMANDER ROOM and try to leave through the South door, CAMPBELL/ NAOMI will scold you.
OBJECTIVE:
  • Head through the North door.
UNDERGROUND PASSAGE (U.GRND PSSGE)
OBJECTIVE:
  • Follow MERYL's lead.
    (*) Tripping the MINES up will make MERYL disappointed.
    (*) If you exit and enter the area again, MERYL's footprints will disappear. After that, when in close proximity of a mine, MERYL will warn him, and SNAKE's movement will be halted.

OBJECTIVE:
  • Find a Sniper Rifle to help MERYL.
    (*) Contact OTACON for hints.
    (*) Keep shooting MERYL and CAMPBELL/ NAOMI will get extremely upset at you.
    (*) Contact MEI LING for extra dialogs.
    (*) When crossing back to CANYON, there will be newly placed CAMERA and CLAYMORES.
    The PSG-1 is in the NW room in ARMORY - B2.
BOSS: SNIPER WOLF
(*) Once returning to face SNIPER WOLF, contact CAMPBELL/ OTACON for extra dialogs + hints.

STRATEGY:
  • Use DIAZEPAM to steady your aim.
  • Use PSG-1 to anticipate her movements and shoot her (including running).
  • Use both LEFT/ RIGHT corner to avoid her shooting.

EASY METHOD (Especially for EXTREME Difficulty):
  • Wait for her to hide behind the Pillar.
  • Anticipate where she will peek out. Snipe her.
  • Hide in the corner when she gets out to snipe.

(*) After defeating her, contact CAMPBELL/ MEI LING for extra dialogs.
(*) This is one of the places where you can kill RATS. They're running on the metal bar above the platform where SNIPER WOLF was. Kill every 3 RATS (C4 is an easier method), then CAMPBELL/ NAOMI (2nd time) will scold you.

  • Head in the NE door.
MEDI ROOM
OBJECTIVE:
  • Submit or Resist OCELOT's Torture.
(*) OCELOT will have an extra dialog if you haven't SAVED for a long period of time.
(*) Depending on your choice, you will meet OTACON in either the 1st Break (SUBMIT) or the 2nd one (RESIST).
(*) In the 1st Break, contact OTACON/ MEI LING for extra dialogs.

OBJECTIVE:
  • Break out the Cell.
    - Wait for the Guard to go to the Restroom/ take a nap.
    - Lying down the ground and use the KETCHUP - OR - CRAWL under the bed.
    - Wait for him to open the Cell and get close to you, then knock him out.
(*) The NINJA will the open Cell's door for you if:
- You try the KETCHUP method first. Don't do anything to the guard so you get locked up again. After that, when the Guard is going to the Restroom next time, he will appear.
- Resist OCELOT's Torture 5 times.
(*) When Ninja opens the Cell, contact OTACON/ CAMPBELL for extra dialogs.

(*) Depending on your escaping method, OTACON will have different dialogs once you're out of the cell.
(*) Once you escape and still in the hallway in the South room (not the room with your belongings), before collecting your belongings, contact OTACON for extra dialogs.
(*) Not collecting your stuffs and escape the room, CAMPBELL will call to remind you.

OBJECTIVE:
  • Collect your belongings and escape the room.

(*) If you resist OCELOT's Torture and escape, and haven't yet disposed of the BOMB in your INVENTORY. In about 1 minutes left in the Timer, DEEPTHROAT will warn you via CODEC.
- Contact CAMPBELL afterwards for extra dialogs.
(*) After disposing of the BOMB in your INVENTORY, contact MASTER/ OTACON/ NASTASHA for extra dialogs. (Only available when you Resist OCELOT's Torture and escape)

(*) If you submit to OCELOT's Torture and escape, at some point SNAKE will get a COLD, and randomly SNEEZE. This will also cause nearby soldiers to check.
- Contact OTACON for MEDICINE's whereabouts.
- Contact CAMPBELL/ MEI LING (SAVE) for extra dialogs.

(*) All the items are respawned (NORMAL), new items are added.

OBJECTIVE:
  • Escape the chase.
    (*) Immediately pick up the ROPE after being spotted. Run all the ways to the ROOFTOP. There aren't special items beside ammunitions for SOCOM/ FA-MAS.
    STRATEGY:
    • FA-MAS/ STUN GRENADES/ CLAYMORES are effective means to fend off the Soldiers.
    • BODY ARMOR also helps reduce the damages.
    (*) During the chase, in mid-way, try to open the Lvl6 door and OTACON will give you the hint of opening this door.
ROOF/ COMM TWR
(*) Once at the rooftop, contact CAMPBELL/ OTACON for extra dialogs.
OBJECTIVE:
  • Head across the walkway to the other side.
    (*) Before using the ROPE, contact CAMPBELL/ OTACON/ NASTASHA for extra dialogs + hints.

  • Use ROPE on the railing to escape the HIND D.
(*) Once the rappelling section starts, contact OTACON for extra dialogs.
(*) Ignore the RATIONS along the way.

    (*) There are gun cameras along the stairs to the ROOFTOP. STINGER can be used to destroy them.
    In EXTREME Difficulty, they will respawned, use CHAFF instead.

EASY METHOD:
  • Stay at the MODERATE to FAR range and run sideways to avoid the gunfires.
  • At FAR range, once it sits down and will shoot 3 missiles, get to CLOSE range and shoot its weak point with STINGER.
  • Repeat the process.

  • Range Indicators:
    • TOO CLOSE - Stomping Leg.
    • CLOSE/ MODERATE - Laser beam.
    • MODERATE/ FAR - Gunfires.
    • FAR - Missiles.
BOSS: LIQUID SNAKE
STRATEGY:
  • In the 1st Phrase, attack him full combo.
    • When he's in the fighting stance (Hands in front), hit once and CROUCH to dodge his kick.

  • In the 2nd Phrase (75%HP), hit him 2-hit combo then CROUCH to dodge as he does the same. Repeat this process.
    • Hit him full combo will make him relocate.
    • When he starts charging, CROUCH to avoid the damage.

  • In the 3rd Phrase (25%HP), do the same as in the 2nd Phrase, but LIQUID will do the full combo with the kick.

  • In the last Phrase (0%HP), you must hit him with full-combo to kick him out of the edge.
