Description
The Columba
A small large grid exploration/utility aircraft.

The LAC-10E Columba is a flying mobile base, designed to operate autonomously in harsh environments. The LAC-10E can freely explore any planet in the Solar System with an atmosphere. It has been designed to be as inexpensive and easy-to-use as possible, while providing adequate autonomy, resource processing and manufacturing capabilities.

The intended role of the Columba is to explore planets in search of potential base locations, while acting as a mobile outpost for the explorer. It can also perform long range visual reconnaissance, or even trading runs between ground stations (although specialized versions of the LAC-10 exist, which may become available in the future). Any small outpost with power generation and a connector can be used as a staging area from which the LAC-10E can perform its mission.

The Columba is equipped with a survival kit, cryochamber and O2 tank, so that it can support an engineer in planets lacking oxygen. However, it has no O2/H2 generator, requiring some form of outpost or base with on-site oxygen generation. It has no weapons either, but the LAC-10 design allows for easy modification or replacement of the ship's systems to suit user needs.

@apollo Ah, ok thanks! In that case, you can replace some armor with flat thrusters without changing the exterior too much. Side thrusters behind the existing side ones, and downward thrusters where the ladder attaches to, or replacing the wings.
This was a design of compromises, so some things had to give. Also the expectation is that the user modifies the ship as they best like it, so it should be taken as a starting point/barebones model.

It's underpowered in the thrust section. When I spawned it on the starter air planet, it almost crashed because the side thrust was weak, as well as the upward thrust. I love the design, but I think it's underpowered in terms of thrust.

works grate

@apollo I'd be useful if you provided a bit more detail with your feedback. What do you think is underpowered? Thrust? Power output?
apollo 6 Jun @ 1:19pm
ist under powered

@Badrabbit As pointed out in the description, you don't need DLCs to use it, but you will have to replace 2 thrusters with regular, non-DLC ones when you build/paste the craft. There are some DLC textures too, but that's just aesthetic.

@Ghevd You're welcome! I like doing the 3d models from time to time, but sometimes I have to remove blocks from the larger ships due to sketchfab restrictions. This one has all the blocks though.

Thank you for the 3D models on the workshop. It is so nice to look through the guts of the ship without having to resort to crossing my fingers and hoping there is a tour on youtube.

It's like a not-ornithopter
