Description
Adds Unique Mercenary Units for All Eras. Works as a Standalone!
All of these features are an integral part of Gaia's Core Mod.
Botroas (Classical Era)
Abilities: Can pillage without spending any Movement. Steals gold when attacking a city.
Lore: The Botroas were fearsome Celtic mercenaries from Gaul, highly sought after by Mediterranean powers like Carthage and the Hellenistic kingdoms. Unlike traditional tribal warriors, they operated as professional soldiers, excelling in ambush tactics and relentless assaults. Their loyalty was to gold rather than any single ruler, making them both valuable and unpredictable.
Varangian Guard (Medieval Era)
Abilities: Can pillage without spending any Movement. Steals gold when attacking a city.
Lore: The Varangians were elite Scandinavian warriors who served as mercenaries across Europe, most famously forming the Varangian Guard of the Byzantine Empire. Known for their discipline and skill with the massive Dane axe, they acted as the emperor's bodyguards and played a key role in Byzantine military campaigns.
Landsknecht (Renaissance Era)
Abilities: Can pillage without spending any Movement. Steals gold when attacking a city.
Lore: The Landsknechts were formidable German mercenaries, renowned for their colorful uniforms and their deadly pike formations. They revolutionized Renaissance warfare by combining discipline with aggressive tactics, serving in conflicts across Europe for whoever could afford their services.
Gurkha (Industrial Era)
Abilities: Gains +20% Combat Strength when fighting in Hills.
Lore: The Gurkhas are legendary Nepalese soldiers, renowned for their discipline and extraordinary combat skills. Recruited into the British Army after the Anglo-Nepalese War, they have served with distinction in numerous conflicts, wielding the kukri knife as both a tool and a weapon. Their motto, "Better to die than be a coward," reflects their fearless reputation.
Foreign Legion (Modern Era)
Abilities: Gains +20% Combat Strength when fighting in foreign lands.
Lore: The Foreign Legion is an elite mercenary force within the French Army, drawing volunteers from across the world. Known for its rigorous training and unwavering loyalty, it has played a major role in conflicts worldwide, symbolizing discipline and international brotherhood.
PMC Operative (Atomic Era)
Abilities: Receives bonuses when embarked or attacking over rivers.
Lore: Private Military Contractors (PMCs) have emerged as a dominant force in modern warfare, offering combat and logistical services outside of national militaries. Operating in conflict zones worldwide, PMCs blur the lines between state and corporate military power, sparking debates about their role in global security.

Would you ever consider adding some extra kinds of mercenaries that have other bonuses than the pillaging one? Like a Swiss guard unit that has improved combat strength in friendly territory? Since the policy is in commerce it makes sense for trade civs like Venice to have mercenaries but those same civs generally aren't raiding and declaring offensive wars

Just noticed the maintenance cost for these mercenary units - 15 gold per turn for a PMC OUCH
Purchase price is fine But unless your civ is Very wealthy dreams of a mercenary army are over.
