In the East of 1894, the complete success of the Westernization Movement saved the ancient Eastern empire, and with the reform led by the Westernization group, to which Hung-Chang Lee and Kuo-Fan Tseng belonged, the situation of the Qing Empire, both inside and outside, has begun to ameliorate: the empire started to get rid of political corruption, loose army discipline, outdated technology, and weak army, at least to some extent. They returned to the center of the world as if phoenix rising from the dead, and the national market of China has grown like never before. Japan, on the other hand, paid its price for its arrogance to challenge the empire without careful planning.

The newly-born Empire of China, however, was just a follower among all the empires and global powers. The ancient infrastructure of the army and politics was still kept in China, and the foundation of the empire cannot sustain severe challenges. The life of previous Manchu Baqi nobilities and government officials was still luxurious. As the tension around the world became even more tense, the world was divided and taken by the empires of Britain, France, Russia, Austria, Germany, and China. The relationship between the Russian Empire and the Empire of China worsened quickly after the Sino-Russian war happened in the northeastern part of the China Empire. As a result, the German Empire reached out to the Empire of China, thus forming the Central Powers with Germany, Austria, and China, as well as the Entente with Britain, France, and Russia.

After the assassination of Archduke Franz Ferdinand, the World War happened, like an aerolite hitting the whole world. This horrible war that never happened for hundreds of years has blown everyone’s mind about the concept of war. The German Empire followed the plan of Moltke the Younger in 1914, defending the border between Germany and France, and attacking the Russian Empire allied with the China Empire. Then, France joined the war and attacked the German empire. In 1915, Japan, the United Kingdom, and the United States joined the Entente due to trade blockage, and the war extended to the Pacific Ocean and Southeastern Asia. In the beginning, The Russian Empire was forced to the east of Arkhangelsk and Astrakhan by the united army of Germany and Austria. In 1917, Germany won the Battle of Verdun over France and captured Paris when fighting on the western border, but struggled with the united army of the United Kingdom and the United States in southern France. On the other hand, prolonged and dreadful trench warfare has taken place in Korea between the Empire of China and the united army of the United States and Japan. The stalemate between the two sides of the war did not resolve until 1920.

In 1920, suddenly everything started to change: the sequential collapse of Turkey and Austria allowed the Entente to advance on the battlefield. Manpower and resource are draining for the German Empire. In the land that Germany occupied from Russia, the June uprising took place, followed by the uprising in Poland led by Piłsudski. The Red Army, controlled by the Bolsheviks, was able to recover large areas of land previously occupied by Germany and announced the foundation of the Russian Soviet Federative Socialist Republic. Attacks from both the East and the West finally crushed the proud hawk of Germany, and the World War ended with the loss of the Central Powers. After the German Empire declared its defeat, the China Empire proposed a conditional peace with the Entente, also known as the “Honored Peace”.

After the war in 1921, the winner of the World War made The Treaty of Amsterdam and The Netherland Convention and created a brand new world order. The Austro-Hungarian Empire was dismembered. The interest of France was also ignored by the treaty, which lead to the rage fueling the trend of right-wing politics. The German Empire was broken apart after the World War, and after integration and revolution, in the end, it consisted of two parts: the Weimar Republic in the north, and the country of Bavaria in the south, which soon was controlled by Nazis. Russia was torn apart by the intervention from China and the Entente, and the heavy strike of the Eastern Europe War and the Siberian War made the Red Army unable to conquer the whole of Russia. Ottoman Empire barely survived the great sanction by the Entente, waiting to erupt like a dormant volcano hiding in the corner of Europe. The two empires no longer had their previous glory, and their domestic conditions looked gloomy.

Similarly, the Empire of China was drowned in the shadows of the aftermath of the World War. It exposed all the problems within the empire to the public. After the war, much land was lost to create buffer zones around the empire. With the economy of China collapsing rapidly, its government was still infighting and corruption was everywhere around the country. As the people in the empire were living in hell, many idealists gathered together, hoping to bring a complete revolution to the country. These actions proposed a serious challenge to the power of the numb emperor, who passed away without knowing what to do. A young emperor was put in this position, but with bureaucrats and the emperor’s mother controlling the politics, it was known to everyone at that time that doom was meant to happen, and there was no way to escape this political storm.

On the other hand, Poland accomplished their dream of independence, but even getting more than they previously thought. The United Kingdom also suffered the loss of the World War and cannot maintain order in Europe alone. As a result, they decided to build a strong connection with the United States, and together they became the guardian of Europe. This connection was formed by the only two countries benefitting from The Netherland Convention, and the only two countries sustaining the order of the world.

When we reached the 1930s during the Depression, the world was scattered apart, and The Netherland Convention was slowly broken into pieces, as Russia, France, and Germany were slowly recovering, while the United States, China, and the United Kingdom were gradually declining. The hate and bitterness of the last World War gave birth to a new round of world conflict.
