Vladimir Vladimirovich Putin, born October 7, 1952 in Leningrad (now Saint Petersburg), is a Russian statesman. Since 1999, he has been the central figure in the Russian nation's executive branch, serving alternately as Prime Minister (1999-2000 and 2008-2012) and President of the Russian Federation (interim from 1999 to 2000 and full President from 2000 to 2008 and since 2012).

An officer of the KGB, the USSR's main intelligence service, he was stationed in Dresden at the time of the fall of the Berlin Wall. He began his political career as mayor of Saint Petersburg, then became one of President Boris Yeltsin's closest advisors, who appointed him director of the Federal Security Service (formerly the KGB) in 1998, and then prime minister of Russia the following year.

From December 31, 1999, following the resignation of Boris Yeltsin, he served as interim president of the Russian Federation. He became full president on May 7, 2000, after winning the early presidential election. During his first term, he launched a series of major reforms to restore the power of a country in economic crisis that had lost its influence in the world. He led the recovery of the national economy and an institutional policy focused on the concentration of presidential powers. He was re-elected by a large margin in 2004.
