JGR/JNR Class EF56 Electric Locomotive

Winter in Japan gets so cold that heating is necessary.
Therefore, it is necessary to heat the carriages.
In the case of steam locomotives, the steam generated
from the locomotive is fed directly into the carriages for heating.
Electric locomotives, however, do not have this function,
so a separate boiler car for heating had to be prepared.
The class EF56 is an electric locomotive with its own heating boiler.
Although the performance of class EF56 is the same as that of the EF53,
the appearance of class EF56 is completely different from that of class EF53
due to improvements in manufacturing technology.
The 1937 model had a streamlined, round body,
while the 1940 model had a more angular body that was easier to build.
