I always thought that the way the survivors held the tonfa made no sense and looked pretty weird so I repositioned the tonfa so the survivors are actually holding it by the handle/grip.

They're civilians so I don't think the way they hold it matters much. Really cool though, nobody has done this I don't think

Technically, there is no "correct" way of holding a Tonfa and every way provides their own advantages; be it blocking, hooking, striking or thrusting.

Also, no, unless you have terrible hand/eye coordination or really slippery hands, you shouldn't hurt yourself by using a tonfa like this.
