Global War On Terror Era American Forces

Like the "war on drugs", the "global war on terror" serves many deeper purposes. Possibly the most important of these is to increase fear among populations exposed to the concept (i.e. primarily the populations of US, UK, other 'developed' nations). This is well understood as a modern version of the "strategy of tension" applied in Italy in the 1970s and 80s by Operation Gladio. Damaging social cohesion and rendering people mentally (and in the longer term, also physically) weaker in this way is an effort to strengthen the relative position of those who behind the operation. As well as providing numerous avenues for profiteering, the timing of the "global war on terror" just after the end of the cold war would suggest the of the war machine will forever be permanent.
