Decurion MK 5

History

The Decurion Mk 5 marked the culmination of Australia’s homegrown tank development program in the little interwar period, introduced in 1955 as the definitive variant of the Decurion line that started witht he MK 1 in 1948. Once the Allies started a war against the Soviet union in china, the australians deployed its armored divisions along the densely populated and infrastructure-rich Chinese coast. There, the Decurion found its ideal battleground: city streets, lowland terrain, and defensible positions where its weight and firepower could be used to fullest extend.
With a combat weight of 51 tons, the Decurion Mk 5 had good frontal armour protection, but lacked side armour. Sideskirts had to be installed to protect against upgraded AT rifles. Australian tank crews quickly grew fond of the tank for its survivability and unusually large interior—rare luxuries in the brutal coastal offensives. Its 104mm L8A3 cannon, firing early APDS rounds, proved extremely effective against Soviet T56-series tanks and bunkered positions in urban combat. However, as newer Soviet armor appeared later in the war, the Decurion began to show its age, struggling to penetrate the frontal plates of improved enemy MBTs. In its infantry support role, the Mk 5 performed admirably, though its early high-explosive ammunition had notorious fuze reliability problems that sometimes left shells inert on impact. This issue was only resolved after a mid-production redesign.
Despite its strengths, the Decurion Mk 5 was a logistical burden. Its large engine and heavy chassis were powered by a petrol-hungry engine that gave it a range of just 120 kilometres. Additionally, while well-suited to the open terrain of coastal China, the tank struggled as Australian forces pushed northward into highland regions. The thinner air at elevation sapped engine performance, and the tank's bulky frame made it cumbersome on narrow or broken terrain. By late 1957, most Decurion units had been pulled back to lower altitudes and re-deployed to more favourable fronts, still alongside American forces. When deployed in rear line duties they seldom saw action against rebel forces and usually were not deployed even when near them. The weak side armour was just too much of a threat to itself in those situations. Any loss of decurions could not be replaced since the production lines were shut down by 1956 and most previous models were upgraded the MK 5 standarts. This resulted in only about 1.240 units being made total. Earlier models had rarely left Australian soil due to them being used by training units, guard units and of course being upgraded to the new standart. The MK 5 variant remained Australia’s main frontline tank until the mid-1960s, after which it was gradually replaced by a more modern platform. Still, the Decurion’s thick armour and psychological presence meant it continued serving in second-line and guard units well into the early 1970s.

About the Project
The Pacific Front is a Alternate History Project about the time from 1940s through to the 70s in a time of turmoil, war and desperation. It focuses on the countries around the pacific ocean, like the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Russia, China and a lot more. All the the project vehicles are fictional in nature and have their own story, lore and design. The Projects creations have a tendency for high fidelity, decoration and multi crew operation.
