M4Y41 "Crayon"

History

The M4Y41 “Crayon” light tank, introduced in 1951, was originally a stopgap design but ended up defining U.S. light armour doctrine during the early years of the war against the Soviet Union and their asian allies. At just over 22 tons, the M4Y41 prioritized mobility and reconnaissance firepower, mounting a 76.3mm M14 anti-tank gun and a coaxial heavy machine gun. While unsuitable for brawling with main battle tanks, it proved lethal against light armored threats and was valuable in direct infantry support roles.

With a top speed of 65 kph and a range pushing 200 kilometers, the Crayon was well-suited to the fast-moving, fractured combat zones that defined the U.S. campaign in central China and the Indochinese border regions. Its speed allowed it to rapidly reposition, flank enemy positions, and outrun heavier Soviet Armour. While never intended for long-term frontline brawling, the M4Y41 often found itself pressed into such roles due to unit shortages, where it performed adequately—if not impressively—thanks to its quick reaction time and decent fire control optics for a light tank.

However, the vehicle’s thin armour quickly became a liability in rear line combat, but also on frontlines. Crayons were notoriously vulnerable to anti-tank rifles, artillery airbursts, and mines, and were especially easy prey for handheld AT weapons during urban fighting or jungle ambushes. Their performance against insurgents was initially acceptable—especially when used in convoy escort or fire support roles—but casualty reports mounted rapidly. By 1956, M4Y41 units were withdrawn from counterinsurgency duty entirely after multiple losses to improvised explosives and hit-and-run AT ambushes.

The M4Y41 would be the last traditional light tank to enter U.S. frontline service. While it performed admirably in its intended role, the changing face of warfare rendered such vehicles increasingly obsolete. It was gradually replaced in scout and expeditionary roles by a new generation of amphibious, air-mobile light vehicles better suited for asymmetric warfare and coastal operations.

About the Project
The Pacific Front is a Alternate History Project about the time from 1940s through to the 70s in a time of turmoil, war and desperation. It focuses on the countries around the pacific ocean, like the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Russia, China and a lot more. All the the project vehicles are fictional in nature and have their own story, lore and design. The Projects creations have a tendency for high fidelity, decoration and multi crew operation.
