M133A1 Berserker

History

The M133 Berserker marked the final chapter of America's WWII-era heavy tank doctrine. Developed throughout the mid to late 1940s, it was envisioned as a battlefield response to the increasingly powerful armoured threats encountered on the Asian mainland—particularly the Japanese Chi-Ta series heavy tanks that appeared in 1945. The M133's design lineage traces back to the HT-26 Heavy Tank program, which had been initiated during the closing years of the Pacific War as a stopgap against Japan's final armoured push.
Initial specifications issued in early 1945 called for a 60-ton heavy tank armed with the T16 90mm high-velocity anti-tank gun, a secondary support weapon, and a range of at least 200 miles. The focus was on long-distance engagement capability, cross-country mobility, and frontal armour protection capable of withstanding direct hits from enemy high-calibre guns. These requirements proved ambitious, and the M133’s development suffered from frequent delays, design disagreements, and logistical concerns.

By late 1948, the finalized M133 entered production. It retained a heavily armoured glacis and dual-purpose firepower: a 90mm T16 main gun and a secondary T12 2-inch (51mm) support cannon, mounted coaxially for soft-target suppression or utility fire. In addition, the tank featured two machine guns: one pintle-mounted and one coax-mounted for anti-infantry and air defence roles. Despite its imposing arsenal, the M133's crew layout was cramped, particularly in the turret—requiring two loaders to manage the separate guns in extremely tight quarters.
Mechanically, the Berserker struggled. Its twin-diesel powerplant was under strain from the start, frequently overheating or requiring intensive maintenance. Field tests noted poor reliability in sustained operations, and it became clear the tank was not well suited to the rapid, mechanized manoeuvres that increasingly defined postwar American doctrine. Its 60+ ton weight further complicated transport, resupply, and field recovery efforts. Most bridges were already strained by the tank movements of the wars, had to be avoided by M133s due to fear of collapse.
The M133 was first deployed to the Chinese mainland in 1949, where it arrived too late to engage in actual combat. Instead of facing down Japanese armor, it was used primarily along the newly drawn Soviet border in Northern China as a deterrent presence during the tense early Cold War period.
During the Allied-Soviet conflict of the mid-1950s, the M133 was briefly recommitted to frontline units, but its logistical demands and poor mechanical reliability quickly side-lined it. The M147 Crossroad, M51 Chetlain and other allied tanks took over its role with much more success.
By the early 1960s, the M133 was pulled from active duty. While some units remained in Home Guard and training roles, the majority were scrapped, sent to military museums, or repurposed as ceremonial gate guardians at U.S. bases.

About the Project
The Pacific Front is a Alternate History Project about the time from 1940s through to the 70s in a time of turmoil, war and desperation. It focuses on the countries around the pacific ocean, like the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Russia, China and a lot more. All the the project vehicles are fictional in nature and have their own story, lore and design. The Projects creations have a tendency for high fidelity, decoration and multi crew operation.
