T56A - Mod.1947

History

The T56A Mod. 1948 was the Soviet Union’s first major attempt at creating a standardized main battle tank platform for the upcoming entrance into the pacific front during the World War. Drawing from existing wartime experience and lessons from previous tank projects, the T56A was built to be mobile, mass-producible, and moderately well-armed. Armed with the 100mm D21T3S cannon, it delivered respectable firepower, particularly with its powerful APHE rounds that could crack most Western armour of the later 1940s. However, the internal layout was cramped and ergonomically poor, especially for the loader, resulting in slower reload times and high crew fatigue in prolonged engagements.
The tank’s distinctive welded turret, made up of several irregular angles and sharp plate transitions, was a manufacturing shortcut that still provided acceptable ballistic protection. However, it introduced several weak spots and further limited interior space. It also introduced several breaking points where the weld lines would crack after hits, even if the round didnt fully go through. Reliability was also a persistent issue—especially with the tank’s electrics. One notorious flaw involved the electric turret traverse failing entirely after non-penetrating hits to the hull, forcing crews to revert to manual operation mid-combat. As a result, T56A units were often relegated to secondary roles by the early 1950s, used primarily by reservists, border guards, and client states as well as chinese rebellions which got their hand on a few of these.
Cooling issues in hot climates, particularly during operations in Southeast Asia, added to the T56A’s reputation for mediocrity. Many units required retrofitted radiators or field-expedient ventilation solutions just to function during summer campaigns. Despite its flaws, the T56A was produced in huge numbers—over 10,000 rolled out of Soviet factories—and served as a backbone of Soviet mechanized doctrine during the early post War era. Cheap to build and easy to train crews for, it was a tank designed to exist in overwhelming numbers rather than to win head-to-head engagements.
During the mid 50s in the successor wars between the allies and Soviet union states these tanks are used by the thousands by various factions, and by the "new soviet union". They have their successes but not without some quite high loss numbers against western anti tank equipment, both hand held, placed or in vehicle form.

About the Project
The Pacific Front is a Alternate History Project about the time from 1940s through to the 70s in a time of turmoil, war and desperation. It focuses on the countries around the pacific ocean, like the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Russia, China and a lot more. All the the project vehicles are fictional in nature and have their own story, lore and design. The Projects creations have a tendency for high fidelity, decoration and multi crew operation.
