T58A

History

Introduced in 1957, the T58A was a step forward in firepower. It was designed around the new 115mm D45T5 cannon, a powerful main gun that could fire early HEAT-FS and APHE shells against a wide range of targets—armoured or fortified—as well as extremely potent high explosive shells for suppressing enemy infantry in urban and rural environments alike. The vehicle was relatively mobile and of small size for a medium tank, capable of reaching speeds of around 50 km/h, allowing it to keep pace with combined arms advances and rapid manoeuvre warfare in China’s diverse terrain. Its protection levels were a notable improvement over earlier Soviet tanks, especially in the upper front plate, which proved more than capable of deflecting fire from American M51 Chetlains and other contemporary Western medium tanks.

In total, around 16,500 T58A units were produced, making it one of the most widely deployed Soviet tanks of the war. They saw immediate front-line service upon their introduction, quickly being added to support older T56 series tanks in formations. The T58A was later on during the 1960s issued to units of the Chinese Loyalist puppet state, where it played a major role in resisting both Western offensives and the growing rebel insurgency. Ironically, a handful of T58As would be captured or “lost” in supply ambushes and later found serving in rebel hands against Soviet troops. Performance-wise, the T58A held up well in open battles, but its rushed mass production introduced some recurring problems. Weld seams on the upper hull were often weak and required field reinforcement after minimal action, while cheap steel used in some storage bins caused rapid rusting, particularly during monsoon seasons. These quality control lapses were largely accepted as the price for rapid fielding at scale.

Another recurring flaw was the reuse of the problematic T56-series transmission system. Though this choice simplified maintenance and logistics by enabling quick part swaps, it retained reliability issues under sustained operation—especially during extended manoeuvres or prolonged engagements. A more severe oversight came with the first production batches: a missing sealing ring of rubber around the turret hatches. Due to a tooling error and a missing quality control step, early T58As lacked proper rubber insulation, resulting in water leakage during rain or river crossings. Crews in these tanks often found their electronics malfunctioning and were forced to operate in damp interiors—an issue that would become infamous and only fully resolved after the 600th unit. Crew ergonomics were middling overall. While the turret crew had to work in cramped quarters made worse by the large breech and ready rack placements, the driver enjoyed one of the more comfortable positions seen in Soviet tank designs of the time. It would remain in active frontline use until the introduction of the more refined T60 in 1961. However, thanks to its large production run and adaptable platform, the T58A continued serving in various roles well into the 1980s, both within the Soviet Army and among satellite states and allies.

Startup Procedure

  1. Main Electrical Switch, then Engine Master Switch
  2. Wait for the Gauge labelled "Electric Switch" to reach 100%, the Oil Engine Light should also turn on
  3. Hold Down the starter, wait for the engine to turn and only then enable the fuel switch

  4. Note that the Fuel Switch DISABLES THE STARTER CIRCUIT. To start or restart the engine (after stalling for example) you have to disable the fuel switch!

Further Notes
- you shift Gears by holding down clutch and then using the arrow keys to shift
- the fire control system is touchscreen, interact with the screen to move on the turret

About the Project
The Pacific Front is a Alternate History Project about the time from 1940s through to the 70s in a time of turmoil, war and desperation. It focuses on the countries around the pacific ocean, like the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Russia, China and a lot more. All the the project vehicles are fictional in nature and have their own story, lore and design. The Projects creations have a tendency for high fidelity, decoration and multi crew operation.
