IS-155

History

Development began in 1945, as reports filtered in of increasingly well-armored Western tanks under development, particularly in Germany and the United States. Soviet high command demanded a successor to the earlier heavy tank design concepts. One with a heavier gun, more durable frontal armor, and improved crew protection. The chosen design, created by a bureau housed in Experimental Plant 101, constantly at odds with rivals like the T-56 and T-58 teams, focused on raw firepower and survivability over mobility.

The result was a massive, imposing vehicle: the IS-155 weighed over 55 tons and was equipped with the 132mm D2-M rifled cannon, capable of penetrating even the thickest frontal plates of Allied tanks. A modernized turret layout offered better ergonomics than earlier IS-series tanks, though the crew still faced cramped conditions.
Though officially adopted in 1947, the IS-155 saw limited deployment at first. Assigned primarily to the Western Front, it served during the final stages of the German conflict, where its sheer weight and fuel needs restricted operational use. Once Germany was pacified, the IS-155 units were gradually rotated to China starting in 1949, stationed with rear-echelon forces to avoid overtaxing the strained logistics network. These tanks were seen more as a deterrent and backup firepower reserve rather than an active offensive Forces.
Despite their rear-line status, IS-155s were used in several limited actions in 1950–51, primarily in harsh interior regions where scattered Japanese resistance groups refused to surrender. In these roles, their firepower and armour proved decisive, though mountain conditions caused ongoing mechanical issues—particularly with transmissions and cold-weather starting systems.
When the Successor Wars broke out in 1955, the IS-155 was thrust back into frontline combat under the new ruling faction. Roughly 300 tanks were deployed to the Pacific Front, where their powerful gun and thick armour made them formidable opponents in open terrain and river valley battles. In flatter regions of China, they held their own against U.S. forces, consistently trading well against lighter Coalition tanks and even managing to threaten the American heavy tanks.
However, in the mountainous or heavily forested areas, the tank's weaknesses became evident: it was slow, mechanically fragile, and insanely difficult to extract when disabled. The logistical effort to maintain even a single battalion of IS-155s far exceeded that of newer medium tanks like the T-58 or T-60, and attrition through breakdowns became nearly as dangerous as enemy fire.

By the mid-1960s, with the Successor Wars concluded and Soviet armoured philosophy shifting toward the more versatile Main Battle Tank model, the IS-155 was phased out of service. A few units were placed into reserve stockpiles or handed off to Soviet-aligned warlords during the chaotic aftermath of the civil war, but most were scrapped, with only a handful surviving as museum pieces or static defenses.

- the fire control system is touchscreen, interact with the screen to move on the turret

About the Project
The Pacific Front is a Alternate History Project about the time from 1940s through to the 70s in a time of turmoil, war and desperation. It focuses on the countries around the pacific ocean, like the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, Russia, China and a lot more. All the the project vehicles are fictional in nature and have their own story, lore and design. The Projects creations have a tendency for high fidelity, decoration and multi crew operation.
