BTR-51

History

the "BTR-51" was introduced in 1941 to meet the needs of the rapidly mechanising red army. its max speed of 68kph allowed it to move ahead of armoured columns and keep up with the main tank forces. Its top speed was down to its limited armour ( only 7.62 resilient ) and its powerful engine. Its engine would later be used on the Zis-11 heavy truck chassis as it proved extremely relaible and easy to maintain in harsh terrain and away from main logistic lines. It could carry 10 soldiers along with a machine gunner with a Dshka machine gun. This granted it good anti-infantry capabilities and even the ability to engage lightly armoured tanks along with providing ample cover for the dismounted soldiers. Its ability to provide continued cover was limited by poor ammo reserves and its extremely thin armour making any return fire potentially lethal to the exposed crew. Its simplistic design meant over 170000 units could be made over the course of 1941-1950 with many trucks being used by red army forces and rebel forces in the later civil war. It saw continued use well into the 1960s with its design being phased out in favour of more heavily armoured troop transports.
