Introduction to R&D History：
The Type 4 Electric Transmission Diesel Locomotive (ND4) was a model contracted from the French company Alsthom in 1971 and delivered in 1973; its design designation was AD48C. Based on the French CC 72000 locomotives, it was modified according to the requirements of the Chinese railway authorities. Its distinctive front-end design was later referenced by domestic Chinese locomotives such as the Shaoshan 7 (SS7) after the Reform and Opening-up. A total of 50 units were imported. After their importation in 1973, these locomotives also served as technical reference samples, sent to various research institutions for analysis and study, providing different design approaches for socialist China's independent development of electric transmission diesel locomotives. Of course, in actual operation, these locomotives had a relatively high failure rate, and operational departments held mixed opinions about them. By the late 1980s, as all units had exceeded 15 years of service and due to their imported status, repairs had surpassed the capabilities of the workshops. Solutions were limited to replacing components, but the high cost of original manufacturer parts and the poor quality of domestically copied alternatives forced their abandonment. Subsequently, during the mid-to-late 1990s, the scrapping of locomotives in extremely poor condition began gradually and continued. Usable parts were salvaged from scrapped units to maintain those still operational. Simultaneously, they were withdrawn from mainline haulage duties and reassigned to branch line haulage, shunting, and light transfer tasks. Finally, in early 2004, the last three operational ND4 locomotives were scrapped and stored at the Beijing Fengtai Locomotive Depot awaiting dismantling. Because of its unique appearance, this locomotive has many enthusiasts in China. Therefore, in 2012, with the rise of the internet, many Chinese railway enthusiasts advocated online for one ND4 locomotive to be restored and transferred to the China Railway Museum for preservation. This appeal received affirmation from the then-director of the Railway Museum. Consequently, unit No. 15, in relatively better condition, was selected.
