What is Burmania Zoo?

A journey through myths, history, religion—and the wild.
Burmania Zoo is named in honor of Gemme van Burmania, the proud Frisian nobleman who refused to kneel before King Philip II of Spain and famously declared: “Wy friezen knibbelje allinne foar God ” (“We Frisians kneel only for God”). That defiant spirit runs through every stone, temple, and pathway of this one-of-a-kind zoo.
In Burmania Zoo, God and gods take center stage—alongside myths, legends, and cultural landmarks from across time. But don't be mistaken: this is also a fully functioning zoo, with over 100 animals species and more than 600 animals in Burmania West spread across breathtaking habitats in Europe, Africa, and North America. From frozen fjords to dusty deserts and sacred temples, each region immerses you in the stories and spirits that shaped human civilization.
Burmania became so large that it was split into two parks. Burmania East, featuring Asia with a Buddhist and Hinduism Storyline, Oceania with a Storyline about Australian Myths, South America with a Maya Storyline, and Antarctica, will follow in late 2025 or early 2026.

Each zone includes storyline stops—beautifully themed educational displays that dive into religious tales, historic events, or regional mythology. Here’s what awaits you in Burmania West:

📖 1. Tanakh Storyline (21 stops)
Follow the stories of the Hebrew Bible, from creation to exile, with replicas of Noah’s Ark, the Tower of Babel, The life of Joseph and Moses in Egypt, the story of King David and Goliath, the Temple of Solomon, and much more.
✝️ 2. Jesus Storyline (12 stops)
Walk in the footsteps of Jesus—from Bethlehem to Golgotha. Encounter powerful visual scenes like the Nativity, the meeting with the Sameritan woman, the cleansing of the temple, and the Church of the Holy Sepulchre with the empty tomb.
☪️ 3. Islam Storyline (7 stops)
Discover the history and culture of Islam with iconic buildings such as the Kaaba, Dome of Rock, The house of poet Omar Khayyam and the Sultan Ahemt Mosque of Istanbul. The Qibla points toward Petra—by design?
🐫 4. Egypt Storyline (7 stops)
Meet sacred animals of ancient Egypt and explore the mythology of gods like Ra, Anubis, and Bastet among pyramids and obelisks. You will also find here lost sarcophagi of the most famous pharaohs. but be careful because some of these tombs are cursed.
🏛️ 5. Roman-Greek Storyline (10 stops)
Gladiators, gods, and grandeur! Step into the Colosseum, visit the Baths of Carracalla and learn about Roman rituals and Greek deities like Demeter and Venus.
🧱 6. Petra Storyline (3 stops)
Explore the rose-red city half as old as time—Petra. From the Siq to the Treasury, discover the Nabatean world hidden in stone.
🧬 7. African Evolution Storyline (5 stops)
See humanity’s roots with chimpanzees, bonobos, and gorillas. Meet Jane Goodall, Frans de Waal and trace our evolution alongside our primate cousins.
🛶 8. Dutch Storyline (8 stops)
From the Amsterdam canals to Vincent van Gogh’s studio, explore Dutch history, art from Escher and the Charles Dickens Christmas street of Deventer. Don’t miss the Titus Brandsma farm museum!
❄️ 9. Norse-Santa Storyline (11 stops)
Travel through the snowy lands of Arctic gods and Yuletide legends. Meet Odin, Thor, Freya—and yes, even Santa Claus and his flying reindeer.
🤠 10. Wild West Storyline (9 stops)
Ride into the past with gunslingers like Billy the Kid and Calamity Jane, folk legends, and musical pioneers like Leadbelly and Jimmie Rodgers. Tombstone and Tipis await you.
👑 11. European Kings & Myths Storyline (5 stops)
Meet King Arthur, Gandalf, and Dracula. Visit enchanted castles and legendary graves in a blend of folklore and fantasy.
🏴‍☠️ 12. Pirate Storyline (4 stops)
From Blackbeard’s lair to the Flying Dutchman, sail through Caribbean waters in a storyline where fantasy and history collide.
