Originally a sacred Lakota site known as the "Six Grandfathers", this land was guaranteed to the Lakota people by the 1868 Treaty of Fort Laramie. After gold discovery, the U.S. government seized the land in 1877. New York lawyer Charles E. Rushmore named the mountain in 1885 during a mining survey. The sculpture project aimed to boost tourism but sparked years of congressional debate before its 1927 approval.
