DNFC - Dynamic Names, Flags & Colours 1.1.3

Description

This mod is a direct continuation of Otto's Dynamic Names, Flags & Colours, a foundational mod that brought dynamic political and cultural identity into the game world. First uploaded to the Steam Workshop just weeks after the game’s release in 2022, Otto’s mod became one of the most downloaded and respected immersion tools in the community. It introduced a flexible system for renaming countries, recoloring flags based on ideology or culture, and enriching the visual identity of nations across the map.

After nearly three years of steady development, the original project was discontinued in early 2025. This mod now carries that legacy forward — modernized, expanded, and actively maintained.

This mod dynamically changes the flags, names, and colors of in-game nations based on their current government type. By adapting the visual and textual identity of countries to reflect political shifts—such as regime changes, revolutions, or ideological transformations—it adds a rich layer of flavor and immersion to the evolving political landscape.

Whether a country turns communist, theocratic, democratic, monarchist or experiences a revolution, you’ll see its flag and colors update accordingly, while country names adjust to match the new government’s character. This creates a more vibrant and responsive world that visually tells the story of your campaign’s shifting power dynamics.

This is far more than a simple reupload — it's the official successor to Otto’s original work. Rather than starting from scratch, this mod carefully builds upon Otto’s core framework, preserving its structure while adapting it to meet modern standards and expectations. The focus is on restoring functionality, improving performance, and preparing the system for robust, long-term development.

These improvements form the backbone of what’s to come — ensuring this successor isn’t just a preservation of Otto’s vision, but a platform for expanding it.

Several key improvements are planned to guide the ongoing evolution of this project:

Framework Modernization
The entire codebase will be updated to ensure full compatibility with the latest game versions. Deprecated functions and outdated syntaxes will be replaced, and configuration files thoroughly reviewed to align with current best practices.

Legacy Bug Fixes and Content Rework
Many issues inherited from the original mod — including broken dynamic name triggers, outdated flag logic, and visual inconsistencies — are targeted for correction or overhaul. Early content pieces will be polished to better fit the mod’s updated design vision.

File Structure Optimization
The mod’s internal structure will be reorganized to improve clarity, performance, and maintainability. Modularizing key elements like country tags, ideology sets, and region assignments will make it easier to track changes, add new content, and provide compatibility patches in the future.

Active and Regular Updates
You can expect ongoing updates focusing on individual nations and strategic regions, continuously enhancing immersion and addressing community feedback.

These upcoming enhancements will serve as the backbone for transforming this mod into a modern, sustainable, and richly immersive experience.

While the mod is actively being developed and improved, there are several known limitations users should be aware of:

Flags: Many flags included in the mod are based on the original assets and have become outdated or visually inconsistent with recent game updates and community standards. Some flags may not reflect current political changes or cultural nuances, resulting in a less immersive experience in certain regions.

Strategy Regions: The integration of strategy regions is currently incomplete. This can lead to inconsistencies or unexpected behavior during gameplay, particularly in border areas where control or ownership may not be accurately represented. This limitation may affect event triggers, region-specific decisions, and AI behavior tied to these regions.

Dynamic Names: A number of dynamic name triggers and scripts from the original mod are either missing or not fully functional due to changes in the game’s core mechanics and updates since the original mod’s release. This means that some country or region names may not update dynamically as intended, potentially reducing the overall immersion in certain scenarios.

Localization: At present, the mod is only available in English. This limits accessibility for non-English-speaking players and may impact immersion for those who prefer or require other languages. However, multi-language support is planned for future releases, including community-driven translations.

These limitations are actively being tracked and addressed as part of the mod’s ongoing development cycle. Regular updates will progressively fix these issues, enhance compatibility, and expand content to ensure a richer and more polished gameplay experience.

This is amazing! I've always enjoyed Otto's pack and was sad when I found out it was removed from the Workshop because dynamic names add so much to immersion. Thank you for continuing the project

I also want to suggest a formable for Uruguay (and maybe Paraguay, Piratini and Santa Catarina if you reaaaaly what to stretch it), namely the "League of the Free Peoples", wich was a loose alliance of provinces that existed from 1815-1820 with José Gervasio Artigas (still alive at the time) as it's protector.

I suggest it should at least encompass Uruguay, Santa Fe and Corrientes, with Rio grande do Sul and Santa Catarina if you want to stretch it. For it's primary cultures, it could be Platinean/Uruguayan + Guarani and maybe Sulista.
