Yeah it can get messy, I've experienced that when I was running my own test server and the confusion between fastdl and direct workshop took some research. I think I understand just a little bit more than when I started, and I'm pretty sure there's still a lot of confusion floating around in the community.

Of course, the operator running the server can attach arbitrary version information to the map name, but in that case, it is with very high probability that each operator can enter different version information for the same file. So, it feels better if the map creator first decides on the desired version name and writes it in the file name.
If you only play on one server, then it might not be a problem, but if you often go to other servers, then this problem can really annoy you. It's not a good expirence to receive the same file multiple times with just different names, right?

It would be nice to have a complete guide to map making. There's already a lot of information out there and can get you a long ways. But, it's all those tiny details, syntax, format, etc. type things that aren't really public knowledge, or not obvious as to where to find them. Like Hammer++, I didn't even know about that for a while. Anyways, thanks again for the comments.

It's really not hard to work around different version naming.

Just something that some server owners need to learn how to do, I guess.

I appreciate the differing version numbers, thanks! :steamhappy:

Yeah all good suggestions and information. It would be easier if all servers agreed to one way to update maps, but they don't. So I'm just trying to satisfy both sides while learning in the dark.
Thanks again for all the help and feedback even if we don't agree on everything.

As Dysphie said, I think it's cleaner to actively use workshops, but I think thats not just an old habits thing. For some maps, older versions may suit personal tastes better than the latest versions, and if you rely on workshops, some maps may suddenly disappear and become unplayable, so of course, I think it's worth it for map makers to add version numbers to increase the range of choices for users. 🙂

honestly, you don’t need to add a version suffix to your map name anymore, but some people are stuck in old habits. server owners just run workshop_update once to get the latest version, and clients update automatically. as a server owner myself, i actually prefer it this way since all related files (maphacks, configs, stats, translations, etc.) keep working with the map name unchanged. nice touch leaving the speedrun path in!

Btw my naming convention keeps the name of the map nice and clean, looks less messy and less cluttered like some of those maps.

You do realize you're on old code right? It was moved to direct Workshop a long time ago, and doesn't require fastdl, or whatever. So, now there's a naming convention that must be followed too? News to me again. Anything else the map makers should know so the servers can run their maps for free? Maybe a guide or manual from the makers of the game? Because they all bailed when NMRIH2 was about to be dropped and forgot about the mapping community, so we are left trying to figure it out in the dark. But, thanks for the help, much appreciated.
