In October 2014 Valve released their annual Halloween update. This update added the map Special Delivery Doomsday Event. The map contained a specific never-before-seen mechanic in Team Fortress 2: Bumper cars. On this map at the end of rounds players get teleported to 1 of 3 bumper car minigames. One minigame revolves around collecting the most ducks, one is about pushing a ball into the opponents net and getting goals and the last challenges players to survive falling platforms.

The Team Fortress community has since harnessed the bumper car mechanic and made custom content. Content, usually as in custom maps that feature all the mercenaries ridding around in bumper cars racing each other or doing other vehicular minigames.

Team Fortress Kart maps don’t require server mods to play however some exist. As an example a server mod called TF2Kart attempts to expand upon what’s possible with maps alone. Servers running this mod have custom powerups, music and other stuff.

Today, roughly 12 servers run a Team Fortress Kart minigame map or mod.

So in greater detail what is Team Fortress Kart?

Team Fortress Kart is more-or-less the name for the phenomenon, that is all the custom gamemode content made because of Bumper Cars.

Team Fortress Kart is basically a custom gamemode revolving around players playing in bumper cars with each other. Maps usually consist of a team-based race, were the goal is as simple as crossing the finish line first. Maps can also be edited versions of the minigames found on Special Delivery Doomsday Event or they can even be something different and unique.

There’s a bit of nuance in terms of the actual mechanical nature of racing bumper cars on Team Fortress Kart maps. Here are some tips:
  • A collision with a wall slows down the player and should be avoided.
  • Avoid taking damage because the higher the percentage the higher the amount of knockback the player takes.
  • Driving off-road usually has no effect on speed. So taking the most direct path through a map is typically the best course of action.
  • Real world mechanics like drifting and slipstreams don’t exit in Team Fortress Kart. Jumping is possible, however.
  • Maps usually have a highlighted area of floor to indicate a boost zone. Driving over these areas grants the player a speed boost.

Some Team Fortress Kart maps use Powerups. Powerups are one-time use special abilities that are picked up mid-race. Here’s a list of powerups:
  • Uber heals. Reduces damage percent by half and grants a short invulnerability.
  • Boxing glove. Luanches a projectiles to damage and kockback players.
  • Parachute. Shoots the player into the air and slowly drops them.
  • Bomb Head. Turns the player’s head into a bomb. Colliding with enemies cases them to explode and be knocked around. Waiting too long explodes the player.
  • Those are the standard powerups. As stated before the TF2Kart mod has specific powerups that don’t fall into the pool mentioned.

And that’s basically Team Fortress Kart in a nutshell. The result of taking a fun new mechanic and making maps based off of it. A play on words of Mario kart and Team Fortress 2.

Too bad there's barely any servers that run TFKart. There's only one, and it's empty.
