Description
Map: Normandy - 6/6/1944
Invaders: United States (allies)
Defenders: Germany (axis)

Utah Beach was the military code name for the rightmost or westernmost landing beach during the Allied invasion of Normandy on June 6, 1944 (D-Day) during Operation Overlord. It was landed by the 4th Infantry Division of the United States Army (part of the VII Corps), while the German area code for this area was W5. The beach is about 3 miles (5 km) long and is located between the villages of Pouppeville and La Madeleine. It is the westernmost of the five landing beaches.[1] At that time, the Allied battle plan was in its final stages of preparation. As more landing craft became available, the landing on Utah Beach was added to the Normandy invasion plan. This helped stabilize the right wing of the Allied offensive along the left bank (west bank) of the Douve River estuary.[2] Although the US landings deviated greatly from the planned route, the resistance they encountered was relatively light, which was a far cry from the fierce battle at Omaha Beach.
