The Charminar is a landmark of Hyderabad, and as its name "Charminar" ("four minarets") suggests, it is a multi-storey structure supported by four minarets and four arches. Built in 1591 by order of Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah of Golconda Sultanate, there have been various theories about the reason of its construction, one of which is that Hyderabad had been struck by a plague, for which Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah prayed profusely and built a mosque on the site to thank the Lord for divine blessings after the plague had subsided. The Charminar became the religious and commercial center of Hyderabad, witnessing the prosperity of the Golconda Sultanate and later the Mughal rule, and is now one of the most popular landmarks in Hyderabad for tourists.
