Description
"Wait not while your foe fits arrow to bowstring when you can send your own arrow into him."
- Babur

The Agra Fort witnessed the rise of the Mughal Empire. Babur, the founder of the Mughal Empire, stayed in the Agra Fort after the First Battle of Panipat, and his successor Humayun was crowned here. Akbar made it his capital and built the magnificent fortress and walls with red sandstone. Jahangir set up a "chain of justice" here and ordered that if an official committed any wrongdoing, the victim could knock on the chain and appeal to the emperor regardless of his status. Shah Jahan built the Taj Mahal across the Yamuna River in honor of his late queen while his newly-built Red Fort in Delhi is an classical specimen of Mughal forts along with the Agra Fort. Ironically, when Shah Jahan fell ill, his son Aurangzeb killed his brothers in the battle for the throne and was crowned in Delhi, and the Agra Fort became the place where Shah Jahan was imprisoned for the rest of his life.
