As long as they are only meant for the character that they replaces trey will work. The only reason why they say they are having an issue is because they share materials and textures.

There is an issue, none of the ODST skins are compatible unless I use the packs. I want to be able to use different characters with the ODSTs but I can't use them by themselves because they just aren't compatible. If I click on say Rochelle and then Ellis it tells me they don't work together.

Though even with the name in red it should still work. Give it a shot in a random campaign mission (That has Bill}

If you mean that the add-on turns red in the add-on menu then its either because the name change file is conflicting with other add-ons or that there is an add-on image that other addons have named the same name.
