Description
Adds solar sails, a method of propulsion with very low thrust and no maintenance cost.

tbh I wonder if those are worth it.
from my tries, the speed is extraordinarily slow, yet the money build cost of solar sails hex is the same as rocket engine hex, and the manufacturing costs are huge

the only advantage of those is that they have no maintenance, which allows to have tremendous numbers of them I suppose.
tbh I think a few high speed ion engine scouts do the job just as well, since you need less of them.

I guess those can have limited case by case usage scenarios. But still I think the manufacturing costs should be lower, or else the money build cost

This would be interesting if this made the no-FTL have this but instead of 3 points only 2 or 1.

I adore these simple 'engines' both for scouts, and flagships. Thanks Waylon for giving me these as both a simple option, as a fluffy/lore piece. Also I mildly agree with Dunestyler that it'd be great if it worked like armor (as an external component)

no not thrust. internal space.
I mean: armor has no internal space if used on the outside of a ship. if you did the same with the solar sails, it could be used for non-FTL-players as a little boost (the ships are still a little more expensive and take more time to build, but they gain some more acceleration and don't cost more upkeep.)

What do you mean by space-value? How much thrust it has?

could you decrease the space-value for those sails? or make it so that it behaves as armor?
then it would effectively work just like an actual solar sail and could be used for non-ftl-factions as additional thrust and speed source.

they'd actually go along nicely, if you have no FTL (especially not a single player with FTL) and several galaxies...

Yes, but my point is that the solar sails, while a fairly weak source of propulsion in their own right, go along quite nicely with a powerful hyperdrive or a small slipstream generator. (Or a fling beacon, if you don't intend to scout systems but are using the thing simply to monitor the situation in those systems.)

In the ship designer if you are making a pure exploration ship, the ship of max effectiveness is the one with one command center and tons of engines. You can see this really well with hyperdrives or solar sails. As you add more parts the cost goes down and the speed goes up. Just test it out in the ship designer.
