TVSI Swordfish Corvette (Rev 3)

DESCRIPTION

Developed as part of a double project at Tristavian Shipyard facilities above Tethys in 2086, The Swordfish is a fast, well-armed Corvette which together with the Barracuda forms a highly mobile, long range strike force. Both vessels were completed alongside each other in an unusually short space of time while many other designs were receiving overhauls. On the small side for frontline military use, Corvettes are primarily used in packs to raid vulnerable targets and for patrol duties.

The primary focus of the Swordfish is the 6 wing-tip mounted Rocket Launchers which allow it to punch above its weight and damage more heavily defended targets. A good ammo capacity helps ensure it can continue dealing damage for some time and two Size3 hardpoints with superb line of fine complete the weapons compliment. With the Barracuda designed to engage in closer quarters, the Swordfish lacks much in the way of defence, with only light plating, no point defence systems and little core systems redundancy. Other than its counterpart, the Swordfishes best defence is it’s superb forward acceleration.

Internally the Swordfish is fully compatible with a TVSI Standard Docking Mechanism, opening directly into the 8-man crew quarters. Forward of this is a small instrument room with the auxiliary batteries followed by a small fire control room and the main navigation bridge. To the stern is the small main engineering room with access to the main ammunition magazine.

Rev 1: In 2091, currently serving Swordfish Corvettes were briefly recalled for additional streamlining and for installation of laser antenna for cover communications.

Rev 2: In 2098 a larger update to the design provided enhanced life support facilities for the crew.

Rev 3: In 2104 at the onset of the war with the CEU, The Swordfish was recalled to take advantage of recently Jump Drive advances at the expense of the anyway excessive ammo capacity of previous models.

UNIVERSE LORE

Swordfish, also known as broadbills in some countries, are large, highly migratory, predatory fish characterized by a long, flat bill. Swordfish are elongated, round-bodied, and lose all teeth and scales by adulthood. These fish are found widely in tropical and temperate parts of the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, and can typically be found from near the surface to a depth of 550 m (1,800 ft).

Swordfish was also the military codename for one of the three space elevators installed to aid the colonization of Mars. Installed as part of the military-led development of Mars in 2046, Swordfish along with two other elevators codenamed Javelin and Trident were originally built to allow for the rapid exploitation of Martian resources, in turn enabling mankind to spread deeper into Sol.

By 2050 Mars’ population had reached nearly 35 million, most of which were now civilian contractors and their families. Officially chartered as mankind’s first full colony on October 26th 2050 (“Red Friday”) the new civilian led Martian Government retained military control over the more remote Swordfish Elevator, developing the neighbouring regions as Mars’ Military and Industrial powerhouse. The remaining two elevators in more populated areas were officially renamed on the first anniversary of Red Friday.

The Swordfish elevator continued to serve the Martian Government until the 1st Colonial Rebellion War in 2061 where it was destroyed by orbital bombardment in the opening skirmishes; the falling tether devastating the nearby region. Becoming a rallying symbol for the beleaguered colonists, the Swordfish is an important symbol in Martian culture to this day, though not a single live Swordfish has ever been successfully transported to Mars.

The seal of the Martian Senate features two stylized Swordfish wreathed in fire and water to represent the heavy industry and water mining operations which have made Mars a powerful political and military force in Sol.
